Há 800 anos, na tarde de 3 de outubro de 1226, São Francisco de Assis chegava ao fim de sua peregrinação terrena, junto à Porciúncula.

Enfermo e cercado pelos irmãos, Francisco acolheu a proximidade da morte com a fé de quem havia procurado entregar toda a existência a Cristo. Pediu que lhe fosse proclamado o Evangelho, abençoou seus irmãos e chegou ao último momento sustentado pela Palavra que havia dado forma à sua vida.

No Cântico das Criaturas, chamou a morte de “irmã”. Até diante do fim, seu olhar permanecia reconciliado com Deus e com a existência que recebera como dom.
Oito séculos nos separam daquela noite. Seu testemunho, porém, continua vivo na Igreja e em tantos homens e mulheres que encontram em Francisco um caminho para seguir os passos de Cristo.

Neste VIII Centenário, fazemos memória de sua Páscoa e agradecemos a Deus pela fecundidade de uma vida inteiramente entregue ao Evangelho.
