U.S. sanctions on Guatemala’s mines ~2 years ago are barely known in Washington — a blip in the +9K sanctions imposed since Biden took office

But we went to a remote part of Guatemala and found a region in crisis 

+2K employees lost their jobs. Local government lost its biggest source of income. Business activity plummeted.

Unemployment rose. Hunger and malnutrition followed. 

As the Biden admin spent millions of taxpayer $ to prevent migration out of  Central America, hundreds of workers laid off due to U.S. sanctions *decided to come here*

Most tragic of all: At least 4 laid off workers due to U.S. sanctions then died while emigrating to the U.S., per officials & records
