The five additional immigration restrictionst bills from the 118th Congress that will soon get do-over votes in the 119th Congress are H.R. 8281, the “SAVE Act”, H.R. 7909, the “Violence Against Women by Illegal Aliens Act”, H.R. 2494, the “Protect Our Law enforcement with Immigration Control and Enforcement Act of 2025”, H.R. 5717, the “No Bailout for Sanctuary Cities Act���, and H.R. 5585, the “Agent Raul Gonzalez Officer Safety Act”

The Laken Riley Act is just one of six immigration restrictionist bills that the House passed during the 118th Congress that the new House will be voting on again in the coming weeks.

If the Senate votes on the Laken Riley Act before Justice is sworn-in on 1/13, the GOP will need eight Democrats to vote to pass it . As of this moment, two Senate Democrats are cosponsoring it there: Gallego (AZ) and Fetterman (PA)

Now that the first vote during the 119th Congress on an immigration matter has been cast, the consequences of the '24 election are becoming clearer. The Laken Riley Act won with 264 votes in '25 vs. 251 votes in '24, despite Democrats having two more seats now than then.

@MicaSoellnerDC Just seeing this.... I wonder who is leaving the Committee? Or did they dramatically increase the number of Members on it? By my count, with one vacancy and with Bishop, Armstrrong, and (presumably) Spartz leaving, this would put the GOP roster at 28 Members?

@Fritschner With the House at 219R-215D (because of Gaetz not being sworn in), if all are present and vote for a candidate, Johnson can lose 3 GOP votes and still win the Speakership so long as those 3 R votes do not vote for Jeffries. Under that scenario, he would win 216-215.
