I suggest that a powerful lesson of modern history is that when nations resort to political extremes, be they right or left, it invariably goes badly, often catastrophically, wrong. It was vividly so in the 1930s, yet 90 years on much of Europe & the US are being lured down the same dark & dangerous blind alleyways of populism & nationalism. Even Germany, who should have learned the harshest lessons from its history, are now turning to dangerous extremes. The appeal of the strong man leader, & blaming national failure on foreigners, or 'outsider' groups, be they Muslim or Jew, has great force, but it never results in better societies. Sadly, we often don't learn the lessons of history & we might well be heading for years of conflict & chaos, like in the 1930s & 1940s; all distractions too as the planet burns due to our stupidity & selfishness.😥
