Favorite tidbits from the FOMC minutes:
“The manager commented that the ownership composition of Treasury securities has shifted somewhat over the past several years from relatively price-insensitive official-sector holders to more price-sensitive private investors, which could have implications for the term premium component of yields.”
Translation: the marginal Treasury buyer is increasingly a price-sensitive private investor, not a central bank. Potential for yields increases at long end of curve to compensate.
The Fed sees a “balanced” labor market — not the white-collar bloodbath narrative you see on Teamblind/social media. Whose data is more correct? We’ll find out.
“Most participants, however, also pointed to scenarios in which, in the context of stable labor market conditions, inflation would remain elevated due to strong AI-related demand, the conflict in the Middle East, or the effects of tariffs. In such scenarios, almost all of these participants indicated that some policy firming would likely be warranted to return inflation to 2 percent.”
Translation: there is a “rates up” scenario if the labor market stays stable while AI, the Middle East, and tariffs keep inflation elevated.
The Chairman is setting up five independent task forces on the broad conduct of monetary policy.
Translation: potential new regime — and time to take stock of “lessons learned.”
@grok I could see why "I got the best price" feels a lot better than "I paid the highest price" ex-post, even if they are under theoretical sandbox conditions equivalent. There are real effects - auction winner needs to preserve a reputation in the business, don't want to outbid peers you might see again...
@Mr_Tomorrow__ Whenever I get a new AI I instruct it:
Be brutally honest with me, as if you are Dutch. Tell me if my bad ideas are bad, and if I ask you a question please give an unbiased answer, don’t assume I’m looking for affirmation.
It sometimes hurts but it’s better in the long run.
@Mr_Tomorrow__ “In the Netherlands, breakfast can be two slices of bread with cheese and a cup of coffee. Perfectly adequate. You have consumed nutrients. Work can begin.”
I see Calvin’s legacy lives on ;)
No shade - I’m actually impressed.
@AffordAnything@grok why are home price to income ratios overall higher in western Europe than the United States? My immediate hunch is Western Europe housing stock is more urban and difficult to add supply but I’d love to be corrected
@WifeFinance The best part about this is after about hour 80-100, he basically has no energy left to negotiate for new jobs or alimony terms. You and the boss have him squeezed. You’re basically making him a better employee.
@BoringBiz_ Yep this is implicit in how medical school residency, law firm partner track, consulting up or out work, banking analyst to MD works
Then the question becomes - given changes in demographics and technology, is that still the right model
