[ARTICLE - ENG] Girls’ Generation Whom We Loved Back Then, and How They’re Navigating Today’s Era”

“It may sound out of the blue to talk about SNSD when they haven’t recently made a comeback or had an anniversary. But as they mark their 18th anniversary in 2025, we’ve reached a point where it’s impossible to talk about the history of KPOP music without mentioning Into the New World. In that sense, 𝙩𝙖𝙡𝙠𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙖𝙗𝙤𝙪𝙩 𝙎𝙉𝙎𝘿 𝙖𝙡𝙬𝙖𝙮𝙨 𝙞𝙨 𝙩𝙞𝙢𝙚𝙡𝙮.

Looking back at their 18 years, it’s clear that the group’s importance is even brighter now than it was before.

Even though we can't see SNSD’s music and performances as often and even though the members have already become very influential celebrities outside the title of 'Girls’ Generation,' its still true that all the paths they take, both within and outside the 'SNSD' have become a firmly established worldview of their own. Proving the phrase “an era ruled by girls” wasnt a period that started and ended at a specific point in time but is still ‘ongoing’.

SNSD didn't stick to one image. They reinvented themselves as everything from a goddess to a hiphop icon and they weren't afraid to experiment musically. In their music, a “girl” could be anything and do anything. In this way, they continuously brought new inspiration to K-pop and popular culture 𝙗𝙚𝙘𝙤𝙢𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙩𝙝𝙚 “𝙉𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣’𝙨 𝙂𝙞𝙧𝙡 𝙂𝙧𝙤𝙪𝙥” 𝙩𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙞𝙨 𝙡𝙤𝙫𝙚𝙙 𝙗𝙮 𝙖𝙡𝙡 𝙖𝙩 𝙤𝙣𝙚 𝙥𝙤𝙞𝙣𝙩.

The 15th anniversary album, released after a long hiatus, was full of joy and celebration and not just nostalgia. It showed the members hard work during the time apart. 𝙏𝙝𝙧𝙤𝙪𝙜𝙝 𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙨, 𝙬𝙚 𝙘𝙖𝙢𝙚 𝙩𝙤 𝙪𝙣𝙙𝙚𝙧𝙨𝙩𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙢𝙚𝙖𝙣𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙤𝙛 “𝙛𝙖𝙧𝙚𝙬𝙚𝙡𝙡” 𝙣𝙤𝙩 𝙖𝙨 𝙖𝙣 𝙚𝙣𝙙 𝙗𝙪𝙩 𝙖𝙨 𝙖 𝙥𝙧𝙤𝙢𝙞𝙨𝙚 𝙩𝙤 𝙧𝙚𝙪𝙣𝙞𝙩𝙚.

𝙄𝙩’𝙨 𝙣𝙤𝙩 𝙚𝙖𝙨𝙮 𝙛𝙤𝙧 𝙜𝙞𝙧𝙡 𝙜𝙧𝙤𝙪𝙥𝙨 𝙩𝙤 𝙡𝙖𝙨𝙩 𝙡𝙤𝙣𝙜, 𝙗𝙪𝙩 𝙎𝙉𝙎𝘿’𝙨 𝙜𝙧𝙤𝙪𝙥 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙨𝙤𝙡𝙤 𝙚𝙛𝙛𝙤𝙧𝙩𝙨 𝙝𝙖𝙫𝙚 𝙤𝙣𝙡𝙮 𝙢𝙖𝙙𝙚 𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙞𝙧 𝙡𝙚𝙜𝙖𝙘𝙮 𝙨𝙩𝙧𝙤𝙣𝙜𝙚𝙧. They keep moving forward, not stuck in past successes, always reaching for new goals.

While they are already diverse as a group, they also achieved things they never could have if they had stayed only as a group. 𝘼𝙨 𝙬𝙤𝙢𝙚𝙣 𝙬𝙝𝙤 𝙘𝙤𝙪𝙡𝙙 “𝙗𝙚 𝙖𝙣𝙮𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙙𝙤 𝙖𝙣𝙮𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙣𝙜,” 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙢𝙚𝙢𝙗𝙚𝙧𝙨 𝙤𝙛 𝙎𝙉𝙎𝘿 𝙘𝙤𝙣𝙩𝙞𝙣𝙪𝙚 𝙩𝙤 𝙥𝙧𝙤𝙫𝙚 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙗𝙤𝙪𝙣𝙙𝙡𝙚𝙨𝙨 𝙥𝙤𝙩𝙚𝙣𝙩𝙞𝙖𝙡 𝙤𝙛 “𝙜𝙞𝙧𝙡𝙨.”

Their debut song, Into the New World, first became known during the protest in Ewha Womans University and was later used in events like the impeachment protest in the recent years. The song went from being a rallying cry for young women to a folk song loved by people of all ages, which is not something you see often for an idol group’s song. It started as a promise to face challenges together and grew into a song of hope, inspiring a generation to believe in the endless possibilities of “girls”

This wasn’t something they planned but it was people’s choice. But it feels particularly special that ITNW has become a “social phenomenon,” precisely because its original singers were SNSD. They may not have been a group known for explicitly carrying social messages but their continuous evolution and growth were enough to positively influence countless young girls of their generation.

More than any other group of their time, they had a powerful symbolic presence. Each member continues to live out the values they created as a group, 𝙣𝙚𝙫𝙚𝙧 𝙛𝙤𝙧𝙜𝙚𝙩𝙩𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙬𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙮 𝙖𝙘𝙘𝙤𝙢𝙥𝙡𝙞𝙨𝙝𝙚𝙙 𝙩𝙤𝙜𝙚𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙧. This is what makes their message of the limitless potential of “girls” even more special.

They weren’t just an idol group they expanded what “girls” could mean through their music and concepts, always growing and staying connected to the times. I hope that 𝙂𝙞𝙧𝙡𝙨’ 𝙂𝙚𝙣𝙚𝙧𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣, whom we loved in those days, will continue to sing of hope and passion by our side, 𝙣𝙤𝙬, 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙛𝙤𝙧𝙚𝙫𝙚𝙧.”
