Just here with my parents (aged 70s & 80s) @SkyIreland

The protests in Ireland are not about just fuel! They are about the distance between Ireland on this graph and every other modern and developed economy. Ireland is second wealthiest but gets waaaaay less than any other country for that wealth. By a golden mile.
That visual gap in this graph? That’s what people are protesting. It’s a lack of infrastructure and the everyday enshittification of services, the economy, and the additional difficulty of trying to live, relative to peers in any other country. It also highlights why people don’t get uniformly listened to! - because there is no government architecture to engage meaningfully across this huge gap.
That gap is a three hour drive to work in traffic, a 14 month wait for an MRI, buses that don’t arrive, trains that don’t exist, schools that have no places for your kids, houses that are unaffordable, pubs that close before midnight, €12 sandwiches, expensive fuel.
People feel this gap, even if they can’t explain it precisely. And that builds into resentment, and ultimately protest. Fuel just happened to be the next thing that could be pointed to, today.
Morning, @IrishTimes@IrishTimesOpEd article today is on the monumental waste of public money that plagues Ireland. The State is pissing billions away every year. The figures are startling. No one is accountable.

Michael Healy-Rae’s just bought another huge house for €485,000, to accommodate Ukrainian refugees. Its part of his large property portfolio Roughty Properties Ltd. Minister Healy-Rae has declined to comment on this specific purchase.
In 2024 alone, Minister Healy-Rae’s "Rosemount" brand received €470,640 from the Department of Children, Disability, and Equality for housing Ukrainian refugees. Roughty Properties Ltd is now Healy-Rae’s most profitable business, seeing combined profits of over €841,000 across 2023 and 2024. He has declared 17 separate properties for letting, 14 of which are houses.
But sure ya know yerself like! He's definitely not a cute hoor, profiteering from the immigration industry. And it's definitely not a conflict of interest.....

Maurice Buckley's exit payment raises questions about civil service remuneration at the highest levels
The former chairman of the Office of Public Works who signed off on the contentious Leinster House bike shed received a €224,000 exit payment when he retired.
The Sunday Times has previously revealed that Buckley expensed trips to Paris for an executive training programme less than a year before he left public service, and then had a retirement party that cost €7,455.

Trump betrayed Ukraine, secretly colluded with Russians against Europe, and has a secret line with the Kremlin outside of official overview, hidden from everyone including US spy / national security agencies. These are the reddest of flags. A spy sits at the White House.
Dear Europe: If you read this and still think the United States is with you, you deserve everything you fear is coming your way. This is Russian-style corruption incorporated into the American system. https://t.co/VfC0Hq2t32
WSJ with a devastating, intensely-sourced article demonstrating how Trump, Kushner, and Witkoff tried to sellout Ukraine, the U.S., and Europe for money. It's so bad one of our European allies shared evidence of the planned business deals. A must-read.
