"Everybody, this is Michael. Michael was my flight attendant on my flight from LA today." She paused for a second and then said, "But Michael was super nice! He's definitely not one of those really mean flight attendants!" which got a huge laugh.

Suddenly Ellen paused, held her hand over her eyes so she could see the audience, and said, "Where's Michael? Michael, are you here?"

I nervously stood up in the balcony, waved, and said, "Hi, Ellen." Naturally, everyone turned to look at me as Ellen said,

I wrote the note and gave it to an usher but honestly expected nothing to come of it. The show started and Ellen was as hilarious as I expected, especially her very funny stuff about flying, including how some flight attendants could be very mean. Which was definitely true.

Was there any chance she would wish him a happy birthday during the show?
She said she'd love to and that I should write a note ahead of time reminding her of my friend's name and when we arrived at the theater, I should give it to an usher who would give it to her.

She then told me she had some big news -- she would soon have a show on ABC and I hoped I would watch. I said of course, I would. Then I decided to ask her a favor. I explained I was going to the show with a guy I was trying to impress and that it was his birthday.

She asked me about being a flight attendant and I explained I'd taken the job because I knew it would give me lots of time to write. Ellen thought that was wonderful and wished me good luck. I told her I was a huge fan and actually had tickets to her show, which she loved.

I was a huge fan and in fact I had tickets for the show that night! Ellen was the only passenger in first class and she was so friendly that we soon wound up chatting for a long while.

This was the early 90s and I was working an empty flight from LA to Seattle. I had only one first class passenger and it was Ellen DeGeneres who was flying to Seattle for a performance that night. This was before her TV show and she was best known for her hilarious stand-up.
