“Yet what was time, when you got right down to it? We measured its passage with the hands of a clock for convenience’s sake. But was that appropriate? Did time really flow in such a steady and linear way? Couldn’t this be a mistaken way of thinking, an error of major proportions?”
— Haruki Murakami, Killing Commendatore
A Big Mac costs R56.90 in South Africa and $6.22 in the United States.
This translates to ZAR9.14/USD under purchasing power parity. But the market says R16.01 on a Friday afternoon. The difference might be some combination of emerging market discount, policy uncertainty, and country-specific risk.
I've got a 15-handle on the rand (not a forecast, insert smiley).
My thoughts with Ricardo Smith @Absa Investments and @mamokete30@SBGroup CIB for Adriaan Kruger at @Moneyweb:

The Rockey road to freedom: An oasis in the madness - Yeoville in 1994. https://t.co/kTiDCzybpD Such a great trip down memory lane. Loved the Harbour Cafe, and performed in diverse venues over the years. You could also chat to @SanzaSandile of the Yeoville Dinner Club
Indlulamithi’s work is so important. Those scenarios for our future - Vulture Culture, Hadeda Home and even the best case scenario, Weaver Work - are sobering but we have to talk about them. Mazeltov on the appointment @XhantiPayi
"And, to my great surprise, writing in my own voice brought an unexpected benefit: I felt proud of my pieces again. I showed them to my family and colleagues, and their reactions felt special. They were experiencing human emotions to human words."
Yep it’s why we as @moxiiafrica have been fighting for it, and why together with @SOSCoalition we keep pushing for funding model and updated policy. @SABCNews_TV
In Budapest, a rock has resurfaced in the Danube.
It's called the Rock of Starvation - Ínség-szikla. For centuries, its return has meant one thing: the river is so low the mills fall silent, crops fail, and hunger follows.
It surfaced in 1616. In 1718. In 1811, 1830, 1842, 1868. In 1947.
And now it's back, in 2026.
For the first time in 44 years, Hungary has shut down all but one of its Danube-cooled nuclear reactors.
A nearby farmer puts it plainly: "I've lost nearly 50% of my harvest, and it could hit 70%. Since I started farming after the end of communist rule, I've never seen a catastrophe like this."
The rock is a warning.
It's been delivering it for 400 years.
We know exactly what it says, but we haven't been listening.
I hope people in the SA public media system don't react defensively to this @StephenGrootes piece. The SABC is social cohesion and democracy infrastructure, just as important as Eskom. There is a real opportunity, and urgent need to reinvent and rebuild it right now. https://t.co/uAVlKrt9Gk
A must read by @StephenGrootes . The importance of the role of the public broadcaster simply cannot be overstated. We have to fix this. https://t.co/UBOvCtGEAp
A winery in the Cape Town winelands employs 1,200 ducks as full‑time “eco‑employees.” 🦆🍇
Twice a day the Indian Runner flock marches to the vines, devouring snails and insects while naturally fertilising the soil.
No pesticides, just a disciplined duck parade keeping the vineyard in balance. #Vergenoegd #Stellenbosch #Sustainability #Wine 🍷🍇
In loving memory of Lionel Newton (1965-2026). Widely regarded as one of our country’s finest and bravest actors, Lionel leaves behind his children, Daniel and Rebecca and a remarkable legacy spanning more than 40 years. Go gently, Lionel. Fly with the angels.
@marangdream Ahhh, you saw the lady with the floral head. I've seen images, and she is unbelievably gorgeous!! LOoks like you're having a fabulous time x
