During this time period, there was a significant influx of Mexican immigrants into states like Texas and Louisiana, largely due to the Mexican Revolution (1910 - 1920). While Americans were quite familiar with "cannabis" because it was present not only in cough drops but in almost all tinctures and medicines available at the time, the term "marijuana" was relatively foreign and was used almost exclusively by Mexican immigrants.

The American media began to exploit public fears by spreading falsehoods about Mexican immigrants, portraying them as "disruptive" due to their use of marijuana. The rest of the nation often didn't realize that this marijuana was a plant already present in their medicine cabinets.

The demonization of marijuana became an extension of the demonization of Mexican immigrants and an effort to control and monitor them more closely. Texas adopted a strategy from San Francisco, which had banned the use of opium decades earlier in an attempt to control Chinese immigrants.

During hearings regarding the prohibition of marijuana, claims were made that marijuana had the ability to cause men of color to become violent and solicit sex from white women. This imagery played a significant role in the passage of the Marijuana Tax Act of 1937, which effectively banned its use and sale.

@joerg_spengler Ich kann den Mist nicht mehr lesen. Wir leben auf dem Land brauch mit Bus ind Bahn gut zwei Stunden zur Arbeit, einfach und zurück den ganzen Mist wieder. Ja und ab und an fällt auch einmal der Zug oder U-Bahn aus. Mit Auto sind es 45min, ja was nehme ich da?
