A few years back, I was on a buddy’s boat over July 4th weekend out on Lake LBJ. All of our significant others were with us, the sun was out, the water was great and then the boat died right in the middle of the lake.
He was frustrated. Rightfully so. The whole afternoon felt shot.
We eventually got towed back to his family’s dock and he was still wound up, convinced the day was ruined.
I remember telling him:
“Man… we’re lucky to even have a boat to break down.”
We were borrowing the lake house.
We were borrowing the boat.
The thing hadn’t been serviced in who knows how long.
And still, here we were. Out on the water. With people we love. On a holiday weekend. In a moment a lot of folks would trade for instantly.
Was it annoying? Absolutely.
Was it inconvenient? Sure.
But it also wasn’t a real problem.
My Mom always encouraged me to reach for gratitude when I needed a realignment.
It doesn’t magically fix anything.
But it resets your expectations.
It pulls you out of frustration and reminds you how much you already have.
And it keeps the small stuff from stealing an entire day.
Gratitude wasn't going to stop the boat from breaking down, but it does keep you from missing the fact that you’re still out on the water.
We were in Colorado last week and I was struck by what is now an enormous disparity in wealth between the US and the UK.
Spent a couple of nights in a cabin in an RV park - it had pools, slides, mini golf etc, fun for the kids.
But the place was packed with RVs worth hundreds of thousands of dollars. Not only that, but it’s clearly a conservative form of vacation, so the average car on site was a pickup truck. These were almost universally less than a couple of years old, and worth at least $60-80k, if not more.
I could drive you to the poshest place in Northern Ireland and though you’d see the occasional high end vehicle, the average car there would probably cost half as much as these.
And then I was talking to someone and they said: “Yeah, this is the most typical middle class American summer getaway.”
Middle class.
Our economies used to be roughly on a par when it comes to GDP per capita. And now the American middle class lives at a level than puts the UK upper classes to shame.
Sad times for us. Kudos to America for resisting the socialism that has ground our economy to a halt.
I was in 5th grade the first time I heard Cross Canadian Ragweed. My brother picked me up on a Friday afternoon from Reaves Intermediate school in Conroe in his truck. We were headed to my grandparents barn when he put a CD in the radio and said “you have to hear this song. It’s called 17” and I was instantly hooked. A defining moment in me wanting to write songs and play guitar. Fast forward 20+ years and my first time seeing them play live, I got to sing with them in front of 48,000 people. A moment I’ll never forget. Thank you to those boys for having me. Long Live red dirt music.
Let’s clarify something. This is what I said during a conversation about why Nikki Haley was not active in his campaign
“Donald Trump, you never see him around strong, intelligent women. Ever. It’s just that simple. They’re intimidating to him. He doesn’t like to be challenged by them and, you know, Nikki Haley will call him on his nonsense with reproductive rights and how he sees and treats and talks about women. I mean, he just can’t have her around. It wouldn’t work.”
I’m happy to clarify that
1. I know many strong, intelligent women voting for Trump. Including in my extended family. I’m certainly not saying female voters are not smart , strong and intelligent.
2. I know he has worked with strong intelligent women, like Elaine Chao, Kelly Anne, Ivanka and many others
I stand by my opinion that he does not like being challenged publicly.

@TheCheeragent I think if the world of cheer ever wants to be recognized and respected as a sport, it needs more NCAA-like oversight. But as you said, there’s more money in the way it is now. For that reason, I don’t think it will ever change. ☹️
@HEB what is going on with the Mi Tienda line of meats?! I have been on the hunt for the Bistec Norteño and am noticing all varieties are out of stock at many stores in San Antonio.
@etc1974@DanaStorms@theNCATA Former cheer mom, current stunt mom here…I don’t particularly enjoy the association because of the reputation, but stunt is amazing and also offers all the things mentioned with A&T. I’m thankful for the opportunity it’s given my daughter. There is life after cheer!
