In 2019, NHS nurse Charlotte Lay arrived at Crossflatts railway station believing she had reached the end of her story.

As she sat on the tracks, train driver Dave Lay brought his train to a stop. He didn't rush toward her or raise his voice. He climbed down, sat beside her for about 30 minutes, introduced himself, and simply talked to her until she felt safe enough to leave the tracks.

The next day, Charlotte searched for the man who had treated her with kindness when she needed it most. They stayed in touch, their conversations became a friendship, and over time that friendship became love.

A few years later, they stood together at the altar and became husband and wife.

Their story didn't end there. When Dave later ignored persistent back pain, Charlotte urged him to see a doctor. The tests revealed testicular cancer, and doctors told him it had been caught in time. The man who once saved her life would later say that she had saved his.

One stopped a train. The other refused to let him ignore the warning signs. Together, they gave each other the chance to live the life they almost never had.
