Before I built the 1st AI Rideshare App in South Africa....I grew up "Hike-ing" long before @hikeappsa became an app.

When our school transport left us behind, walking wasn't a choice, it was the only option. School was nearly 20km away, and many days we would walk to the main road in ekasi, hoping to catch a lift home.

That's where I learned the true meaning of Ubuntu.

Strangers would stop, open their doors, and safely give us a lift from ekasi to town, and from town back home. They didn't know us, and they expected nothing in return. They simply understood that someone needed help.

Those experiences stayed with me.

When I started building the first version of Hike back in 2021, I was driven by that same spirit. At the time, I didn't fully understand what Hike would become, what its purpose would be, or what contribution it would make. I was simply building.

As the journey continued, I started listening. I listened to the stories of everyday e-hailing drivers. I learned that many of the transportation challenges I experienced growing up were challenges others faced every day, except their livelihoods depended on it. Their ability to put food on the table, support their families, and create opportunities for themselves depended on transportation.

That changed how I saw Hike.

It stopped being about creating another e-hailing app. It became about creating something drivers could genuinely be part of. A platform built with the community, not just for the community. A platform that helps drivers earn better, live better, and have more opportunities beyond simply completing trips.

Today, as we prepare to launch this new version of Hike, we are launching with better features, better technology, and most importantly, better benefits for drivers. Features designed to make their work easier, their earnings stronger, and their future more sustainable.

I am no longer building this alone. I am fortunate to be surrounded by a dedicated team that works tirelessly every day to bring this vision to life.

Our goal is simple: to build a platform that reflects Ubuntu. A platform where technology serves people, where drivers have a voice, and where communities can move forward together.

Hike is not just about getting from point A to point B.

It's about people helping people, just as they did for me all those years ago standing on the side of the road, hoping someone would stop and give me a lift home.
