I have advocated for enterprise sharing and #publicprivatepartnerships, but with balance for individual rights and fighting crime. Data Protection HELPS target the bad actors and protects good people. Thread coming to show how the #EU is leading that way. #AMLR 4/4
For 15 years I've shown that privacy #dataprotection laws do not prohibit sharing for #AML#CFT purposes. #FATF has also stated this several times and validated this view. Yet, the narrative persists that #privacy is a hindrance to compliance. 1/4
#PETs do not solve the privacy "issue." (A statement I see too often) It's an AML #secrecy issue made worse by bad data governance and data management & a failure to build #technology with all this in mind (among other things). Focus on the processes before sharing happens. 3/4
In 2015, I wrote that #AML and #dataprivacy firms operated in silos. They didn't understand that data governance and data management truly underpin a compliance program. 7 years later, I have yet to find a firm that delivers this with expertise in both AML and DPP.

Most #AML#CFT regulations/laws don't specifically mandate NN screening, but it's common practice. Criminal data briefly mentioned in the EU's new AML Regulation if it's accurate and relevant. #dataprotection
I've been on a social media break, but the cornucopia of thought leadership on #AML#CFT and #dataprotection will soon return. I'll be posting on how all the things I predicted in a decade are coming true. Yes folks, it's the unapologetic "I told you so" of AML/DPP.
@DJGould94 Every peer reviewer for 5 years who didn't understand that international monetary relations didn't fit their pet theory. I was the only person dancing in my living room watching the 2008 financial crisis & realizing it took a global meltdown to make my research relevant.
And to distance itself further from beneficial ownership no doubt. #AML#UBO#sanctions#OFAC#HMT

PETs are great tools, but do not replace governance and collection processes before you get there.
So #AML#PPP#datasharing folks, I'm not the only one saying this. #safeguards#dataprotection
@MarcHochstein I did indeed. but with a correction - there are conflicts but it is not *completely* conflicting. GDPR does not prohibit KYC, it just asks for limits. EU's AMLR and recent EDPS Opinion address this as does a forthcoming article from me...
