“Research shows that children who struggle to read in first grade are 88 percent more likely to struggle in grade four, and those who struggle in fourth grade are four times more likely to drop out of school….the vast majority of young people who come into contact with the juvenile justice system (85 percent, according to some sources) are functionally illiterate. For those boards actively blocking the implementation of the @OntHumanRights Right to Read recommendations:

Illiteracy is oppression.

Structured literacy (including explicit phonics instruction & early reading screening) is the opposite of oppression.

Here's the thing - while we are concerned about reading skills in K-2, we MUST be working to support the literacy of all the students denied access to reading skills in the early grades. There are entire cohorts of MS, HS, and adult students who deserve the right to read.
