The system does the coordinating. The work runs differently now. The structure around the work has to run differently, too.
Come back tomorrow to read my new piece.
Every box on it exists because one person can only track so much, decide so much, and hand off so much before the day runs out. The chart was built to work around that limit.
AI systems do not have the same limits. And that represents an enormous opportunity for every company trying to grow and succeed today.
You cannot rebuild the workflow and keep the org chart the old workflow required.
The shape that comes out the other side is flatter.
Fewer handoffs, wider expanses of oversight.
The job that is currently happening contraction is not spread evenly across the workforce. It sits decidedly on the youngest cohort.
Early-career workers in AI-exposed occupations are down 16 percent, software developers aged 22 to 25 are down nearly 20%, and job postings in the most exposed roles have fallen 40% since ChatGPT launched.
The bottom rung is thinning first.

MIT reviewed 300 corporate AI projects and found 95 percent returned nothing measurable, and the cause was not the model.
It was that nobody redesigned the work around it.
McKinsey's 2025 survey put only 6 percent of companies at a material earnings gain from AI.
Most bought the tool and kept the old process.
But the tool cannot save a process no one rebuilt.
Here is what most leaders, teams and companies are missing. AI can do the work a junior used to do.
But it cannot do what that work did to upskill the junior's future capabilities.
You save a salary this year. Yet, you give up the most knowledgeable person in the building ten years from now.
That's not a smart trade. The junior you do not develop today is the senior you will not have later. 👇
Tim Ferriss's catalog of number-one bestsellers will sell 80% fewer copies in 2026 than in 2022. Almost all of it since ChatGPT shipped.
Disruption does not announce itself. You do not get to schedule when it reaches you. You can choose however to build at the speed of it.
Fortunately for Tim, he has plenty of additional revenue streams. What would your strategy be in a similar scenario within your business?
A hiring freeze dressed up as an AI strategy carries the same risk. The savings land this year, but they're creating a hole in the 2030 version of your organization.
