@benonwine Then you shouldn’t be. The murder of this young man is appalling. In the same day in the US 30 people were murdered by shooting. They were also appalling. You live in the best country in the world. That’s why half the world wants to live here.
@Neccccy Curry, good batsmen and bowlers. Excellent UBER drivers, surgeons, academics, accountants, lawyers, soldiers , sailors. Friends. That’s more than one. Take your pick.
@MartinMonmouth The decline is more to do with the inability of the public to concentrate for an hour due to their addiction to iPhones. Also the quality of the panelist’s.
@Jenny_1884 I met him twice. He was weird. I never understood why he was so popular. People adored him. Politicians fought to have their photos taken with him. Creepy. That said, I never suspected he was as evil as he obviously was.
As a former police officer from the late 60s early 70s I can state with some authority that Mr Hitchins is right. In my time we patrolled on a set beat. On nights you checked commercial premises for insecurities. If you found a door unlocked or a window open the keyholder was summoned to secure the premises. If there was a burglary or damage caused you were expected to find it. If you missed it and the trader found it on returning to work you were got out of bed and required to explain why you failed to find it. There were no roll down shutters and few alarms. Our detection rate was 75%. This was in Rotherham a pretty rough South Yorkshire town. Elsewhere Mr Hutchins mentions the changes in uniform where the cop now wears a stab vest and has various types of equipment such as sprays. We had a truncheon and a pair of cuffs. I rarely carried my truncheon. in common with a high percentage of my colleagues. The culture being that if we encountered violence we met it with violence and were good enough at it to win. I hope my contribution is of interest. I am 78 years old.
@OapDavid@Sabiha1278 You are looking for a saint not a Prime Minister. The great PMs were dodgy. Churchill was a drunk. Lloyd George a serial womaniser. Asquith also. Wilson was probably a spy. Blair feathered his own nest appallingly. Starmer got his glasses fixed. Come on.
No. As a white Englishman I am proud of the fact we, the British, ended slavery. A status that had existed in all cultures since the dawn of time. 2000 British sailors died fighting slavers between 1835 and 1865. We ended the practice of Hindu widows being thrown on the funeral fires of their husbands. We created infrastructure, brought education. Good governance and democracy. We have nothing to be ashamed of. Others do, the Belgians in the Congo, the Americans ever since their tax dodging antics of 1776 and their treatment of African blacks as well as their wiping out of the indigenous tribes is truly they should be ashamed of.
Ted Heath wasn’t allowed to implement his policies. He was a true “ one nation” Tory. He was unable to take on those union bosses who, because of their ability to withdraw their members from the workplace held the country to ransom. When he bravely called an election to seek the public’s support he asked “who rules Britain”. The result was close. He lost. Trade Unions ruled Britain. We got what we voted for. Chaos. He wasn’t caused by Ted Heath.
@Mofoman360 Elon Musk should focus on the problems in his doorstep. 30 people were murdered in the U.S. yesterday by shooting. Sort your disgusting gun ownership laws out before preaching to us.
