In 2010, Laura Wilson was seventeen years old. She had been groomed from the age of eleven by multiple adult Pakistani men linked to the grooming gangs operating in Rotherham. Laura had an IQ of 56 and the reading age of a six-year-old making her extremely vulnerable and malleable. Despite being known to social services and formally identified as at risk for six years, no effective action was taken to protect her.

Laura was murdered by her seventeen-year-old ex-boyfriend, Ashtiaq Asghar, after she revealed her relationships with him and a twenty-one-year-old married man, Ishaq Hussain, to their families. Police described the killing as an “honour killing,” motivated by the “shame” associated with the existence of her four-month-old child. Asghar lured Laura to a canal bank, stabbed her forty times, pushed her into the water, and held her head under the surface until she died.
