How AI Will Change MaaS

@sampohietanen, the father of Mobility-as-a-Service (MaaS), explains why AI could finally deliver on the original promise of MaaS.

The idea hasn’t changed: give people seamless, integrated access to transportation. What has changed is the technology.

Sampo believes the next major shift won’t be another better mobility app. It will be AI agents that understand where you need to go, learn your preferences, coordinate with the services around you, and simply make mobility happen.

And as autonomous vehicles become mainstream, he believes car ownership itself could eventually disappear.

Technology works best when it solves a real problem.

For micromobility, the opportunity isn’t just building better vehicles. It’s finding the places where people genuinely need another way to move.

One of those places could be airports. ✈️

Traffic, delayed public transport and the fear of missing a flight can make getting to the airport a headache.

Some airports already encourage cycling, including Schiphol, Copenhagen and Portland. But there’s room to make the experience more seamless.

With only 7% of people in the UK having ever used a shared e-bike, there’s plenty of room for new use cases.

Of course, it won’t work everywhere. An airport 8.6km from the city centre is a very different proposition from one 120km away.

The lesson is simple:

Find the problem first. Then build the solution around it.

@nextbike_de is adding 1k e-bikes to its existing fleet of around 5k classic bikes, bringing pedal-assist options to its Berlin network for the first time.

The new e-bikes feature a mid-drive motor, 3-speed gearing and replaceable batteries with up to 120 km of range.

Most maps can tell you where to go. But can they tell you if you can actually get there?

@boltapp Wheels4Wheels project is using its scooters to map the bumps, slopes and uneven surfaces that can make a route difficult for wheelchair users.

In Tallinn, the scooters covered 550 km, producing 66,088 surface ratings. As Ardo Reinsalu, Director of Vehicles at Bolt, puts it, "Every year, our scooters cover millions of kilometres across hundreds of cities, registering every bump, slope, and uneven surface along the way."
