Camilla, a 1K Steps for Stroke walker, suffered a TIA (mini stroke) over a year ago. During her episode, Camilla knew what was happening to her, but was unable to speak or write correctly. Camilla received the care she needed and has made a full recovery. #strokemonth

Camilla had a stroke in January 2022 and had Aphasia, which affected her communication. She says she’s the “same person but better at empathizing with different types of disabilities.” Now she’s an accommodation coordinator at UC.

The opportunity for Black Americans were limited and former enslaved individuals formed their own institutions for education. In the wake of emancipation, many Black Americans founded HBCUs to educate Black students.

During the segregation era, HBCUs offered one of the only paths to a college degree for Black students. This was also how schools were created for Deaf Black students who were not allowed to attend white institutions.

I am a proud HBCU alumna of Central State University
