Geological research with 3D/4D lab and synchrotron X-ray microCT. Design and build of bespoke experimental rigs. School of Geosciences, University of Edinburgh.
On Twitter at last. Edinburgh Geosciences Microtomography. 3D and 4D microtomography applied to understanding geological processes and materials. @GeosciencesEd @ffusseis
This experimental cell highlighted by @stugilfillan is simple to construct, transparent enough for lab microCT instruments, and enables experimental durations of weeks to months, which are not feasible for studies at synchrotron tomography beamlines. @GeosciencesEd
🚨Excited to share our paper on a new x-ray translucent cell for studying CO2 mineralisation in basalt!
This lets us observe fluid-rock reactions at the grain scale under geological conditions. It operates autonomously, enabling long-term experiments🌍

Delighted that we're part of two NERC funded projects based at @GeosciencesEd supported this week. Exciting science related to CO2 sequestration, and to the dynamic failure of rocks is in the pipeline. It includes the development of some very novel multimodal tomography equipment
That’s a wrap - v fun few days drilling samples and running #microtomography at University of Edinburgh. Lets see what hidden gems we can find in these mylonites #projectPOLARIS
Just out, two phase fluid displacement of hydrogen in brine saturated porous sandstone visualised using x-ray microtomography. Led by @EikeThaysen and made possible by @microtomography. Supported by @epsrc through the @HyStorPor project at @GeosciencesEd https://t.co/Um8wDcHYHJ
Hot off the press - synchrotron x-ray microtomography coupled with acoustic emission rate controlled rock deformation. A very cool experiment offering new insights into the formation of shear failures during mechanical deformation of rocks.

Our newest experimental x-ray microtomography cell is now proven at the Swiss Light Source TomCAT beamline. A 10 mm OD rock core can have a triaxial stress state (to 500 MPa axial, 30 MPa confining), fluid flow along the core, and a temperature of 573 K. @ffusseis @Dr_Butty
At the Swiss Light Source running 4D microCT experiments imaging coupled thermal-chemical-mechanical reactions in rocks. It's just turned 4:20 am and the data are rolling in 👍. @microtomography @ffusseis @jamesgilgannon@GeosciencesEd
