The rebuild that followed was bold. In the summer of 1992, Aron Winter left for Lazio and Van Gaal welcomed an unknown midfielder from Finland named Jari Litmanen, signed specifically to eventually replace superstar Dennis Bergkamp.

Then in November Van Gaal sold fan favourite Bryan Roy. He had already secured a replacement when he bought 19 year old winger Marc Overmars from Willem II four months earlier.

In Januari 1993, Van Gaal bought back Ronald de Boer in a rare move, just eightteen months after his predecessor Leo Beenhakker had sold him to Twente.

Litmanen spent his first season learning from Bergkamp on the bench, playing barely 700 minutes across league and cups. He didn't need long to prove himself when Bergkamp and Wim Jonk left together for Inter in the summer of 1993 for a total sum of €15.5 million, another unpopular decision among Ajax fans.

Litmanen inherited Bergkamp's number 10 shirt and delivered an astonishing 36 goals in 39 appearances across all competitions in his first full season at the club, also winning the Dutch Footballer of the Year award.

That same summer brought Frank Rijkaard home from Milan after six years, a true legend of the club and Cruyff's former preferred choice for the number four position, leading the team together with Danny Blind.

Alongside Rijkaard came two unknown signings from Nigeria, Finidi George and Nwankwo Kanu, bought for a fraction of what Inter had just paid for Bergkamp and Jonk. Finidi became an immediate starter and scored four goals in 27 appearances in his first season.

Peter van Vossen arrived from Beveren, adding another attacking option up front. But most of all, youth players Edgar Davids, Clarence Seedorf, Michael Reiziger and goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar broke into the first team. With Reiziger spending two season on loan at Volendam and Groningen to mature.

The 1993-94 Dutch title, the first under Van Gaal, was won with a defence conceding just 26 goals across the 34-game season.

That summer, Ajax had almost secured a deal for teenage Brazilian striker Ronaldo from Cruzeiro, losing out last-minute to PSV, whose parent company Philips used its financial resources and commercial weight in the Brazilian market to redirect the transfer to Eindhoven.

Rather than chase another big name to replace him, Van Gaal trusted what he already had, famously stating: "Ronaldo? We have Patrick Kluivert", referring to the 17 year old academy graduate from Amsterdam.

By 1994-95, Van Gaal had assembled a squad that was about to become one of the most complete club sides Europe had seen in years.

Dejan Savićević. Il Genio.

He grew up in a country that no longer exists and served in the army during his career.

He scored one of the most beautiful goals in the history of the Champions League final and Fabio Capello called him one of the best players that he ever coached.

He was born in Titograd, which is now called Podgorica, in the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. His career started at Budućnost in his hometown. He moved to Red Star Belgrade in 1988, and became the most dangerous attacking midfielder in the greatest team Yugoslavia ever built.

Stojković. Prosinečki. Pančev. Mihajlović. Savićević. Six republics, one club. An extraordinary generation that would never be able to play together at full strength again.

Almost immediately after signing for Red Star, he was conscripted into the Yugoslav People's Army, together with Pančev, who had signed on the same day. Many, including Savićević himself, believed the timing was Partizan's revenge, the army club using its military connections to remove both men from Red Star's squad for the entire season.

He served in Skopje, and was allowed to leave only for European matches. Red Star dispatched a fitness coach to Macedonia specifically to keep him in shape during the weeks between games.

Savićević said about that period: "We only spent time in the barracks in the morning while in the afternoon we'd be at the stadium training. We were certainly privileged compared to other JNA soldiers."

On May 13, 1990, Dinamo Zagreb played Red Star Belgrade in a match that became a symbol for the start of the Yugoslavian war. Within ten minutes a riot broke out. Croatian and Serbian ultras fought on the pitch. The police responded with batons.

Young Dinamo midfielder Zvonimir Boban famously kicked a police officer who was beating a Croatian fan. Savićević was on the other side in the same stadium, which was eventually set on fire. The match was never completed.

One year later, Savićević was lifting the European Cup with Red Star. Three months after that, Yugoslavia fell apart. By the following summer, he was at Milan. Boban was already there.

They arrived at the same club from opposite sides of a war that was killing their families and former countrymen. Boban spoke Italian. Savićević was still learning. In training one day, Fabio Capello asked Boban to translate two words for Savićević. Boban refused.

Despite all of this, they played together for six years. Won three Serie A titles. Won the Champions League. The last photograph from the 1994 final has them celebrating together at the San Siro, a Croat and a Montenegrin, in the same shirt, while the country they came from burned.

The 1994 final was Savićević's masterpiece. Milan destroyed Cruyff's Barcelona. He chipped Zubizarreta from the edge of the area for the 3-0 right after the break. The chip became the defining image of his career. Milan won 4-0. Berlusconi nicknamed him Il Genio, The Genius.

He returned to Red Star in January 1999, was made captain, played three league games. Then NATO bombed Yugoslavia and the league was suspended. He retired in Austria, at Rapid Vienna, in 2001.

Fabio Capello, who questioned his work rate throughout their time together and still played him in the biggest matches because he was so good, called him "one of the best players that I have ever coached."

The streets remember Il Genio.
