With this Perez Hilton self-harm video circulating, I as a therapist wanted to give y’all a brief explanation on that topic:

Self-injury like cutting is non-suicidal self-injury. The intent is to find some level of emotional regulation for overwhelming feelings, interrupt numbness or dissociation, or regain a sense of self-control.

A normal reaction to that is “why would anyone livestream that”?

Well, that’s the point. That person is not thinking logically. They are in crisis. They both want help, and want to help their self. They know that once that video is seen, someone will come help them, and they will get some relief. It’s a cry for help.

If you find yourself or someone you know in this level of crisis, you can call the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline (Call or text 998), or you can contact a trusted therapist or crisis service. Prioritize physical safety and connection with people who can help.
