Watch Senegalese star of Oscar-shortlisted IO CAPITANO Seydou Sarr's speech at the 36th European Film Awards, presented by the European Film Academy, which took place in Berlin last month.

"This is the first time I've made a film, and it's changed a lot of things in my life. This film is about immigration and I gained a lot of experience from it..."

The film was nominated in the European Director 2023 and European Film 2023 categories.

For his leading performance, Seydou Sarr won the Marcello Mastroianni Award for Best Young Actor at the 2023 Venice International Film Festival.

#Netherlands: The 2024 edition of CineMart, the influential (and one of the oldest) co-production market that takes place as part of the International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR), has announced its 41st edition lineup of film and immersive projects.

Of the 16 feature films and four immersives, Akoroko notes...

- HOLD TIME FOR ME directed by Angolan filmmaker Fradique (AR CONDICIONADO, IFFR 2020). A project that continues to draw early attention across markets, forums, and other pre-production initiatives, HOLD TIME FOR ME is "set in a fantastical Angola where trees communicate and cars transform into boats in the desert." Certainly one to watch...

- THE SUNFLOWERS OF THE MOON from Tunisian filmmaker ismaël (BLACK MEDUSA, IFFR 2021). Specific details about the plot or themes are not public at this time. But given ismaël's previous work, it's possible that THE SUNFLOWERS OF THE MOON could also feature unique stylistic elements and explore dark themes.

- LA NUIT (NIGHT) directed by French-British filmmaker Béatrice Gibson. In the film, the protagonist, after an abortion, "wanders nocturnal cityscapes, contemplating a return to her parents' Bamako [Mali] home due to racism experienced in France'. Amid night's various settings, she encounters diverse characters, engaging in conversations about love, sex, money, race, and class, while the chaotic world whirls around them."

Returning for its second edition is the "Darkroom" program of work-in-progress screenings of former CineMart and HBF (Hubert Bals Fund)--supported projects.

Of note...

- LA VIE DEVANT NOUS directed by Olivier Meys, tells the story of Jahia, a 16-year-old Eritrean girl, whose life in a Belgium asylum center is shaken up when she meets a young Moldavian girl.

CineMart will run from January 28 to January 31, 2024.

#Morocco: Marrakech International Film Festival | Winners of the Atlas Workshops

The Marrakech International Film Festival concluded its 6th edition of the Atlas Workshops on Nov. 30th, 2023.

This event, aimed at film professionals from Africa and the Arab world, included 16 projects in development and 9 in production or post-production from 11 countries, offering them tailored support through over 110 mentoring sessions in various filmmaking disciplines.

Additionally, the co-production market of the Atlas Workshops organized over 450 individual meetings with directors and producers.

In the end, this edition awarded eight prizes, with a total cash prize of €126,000, across various categories. The winners follow:

- Atlas Post-Production Prize (€30,000): MOTHERHOOD by Meryam Joobeur (Tunisia); Producer: Sarra Ben Hassen (Tunisia)

- Atlas Post-Production Prize (€20,000): THE VILLAGE NEXT TO PARADISE by Mo Harawe (Somalia); Producers: Sabine Moser & Oliver Neumann (Austria)

- Atlas Post-Production Prize (€10,000): THE MAGMA by Mia Bendrimia (Algeria); Producer: Kira Simon-Kennedy (France)

- Atlas Development Prize (€30,000): AMNESIA by Dima Hamdan (Palestine); Producer: Tony Copti (Palestine)

- Atlas Development Prize (€20,000): THE CAMEL DRIVING SCHOOL by Halima Ouardiri (Morocco); Producer: Margaux Juvénal (France)

- Atlas Development Prize (€5,000): THE PASSION OF ALINE (LA PASSION D’ALINE) by Rokhaya Marieme Balde (Senegal); Producer: Chantal Scheiner (Switzerland)

- Atlas Development Prize (€5,000): HOLD TIME FOR ME (SEGURA PARA MIM O TEMPO) by Fradique (Angola); Producer: Laura Kloeckner (Germany)
