Mr Patrick Okello: As a country, we have an open door policy. Under this policy, refugees can engage in business, get employed and transfer money to Uganda. The urban refugees in Kampala sustain themselves. But we also have a free market economy.
Mr Patrick Okello: Hosting refugees shouldn’t be seen as a burden. There are lessons from this. The urban refugees you see in Kampala are contributing to national development in many ways. The current environment calls for innovative approaches to survive. Instead of complaining, we can adopt good practices from these refugees on how to survive in competitive environments.

I didn't think I'd be shocked at the story but I was. What Hala points to here is what I tried to point out with the Mama Kouki article a while back - displacement is changing the gender dynamics of Sudani families but often at the expense of women.
A very sad day. He was a role model for me when working in #SouthSudan. A great human being, a brilliant mind and a super person to spend time with. He impersonated what the UN should be.
I’m horrified by #SouthSudan violations – civilians are being brutally killed, injured, & displaced daily across the country. Some of these acts may constitute war crimes. The attention of the international community to bring an end to the surging violence is urgently needed.
BREAKING: SCOTUS affirms "substantial evidence" standard of review is the proper standard for review of persecution determinations in asylum claims in Urias-Orellana (9-0) by Jackson.
It is a maddening decision that makes the “mixed fact & law” issue in immigration law practice the ultimate wacka-a-mole. If you're trying to figure out what is the bottom line on this issue and to square today's decision, Wilkinson v. Garland, and Guerrero-Lasprilla v. Barr ... well good luck.

Noteworthy to recall that UN Security Council Resolution 2417 (2018) on the Protection of Civilians in armed conflict, condemns the weaponisation of hunger. @SCRtweets@RichardGowan1

🇸🇸 More than a dozen civilians were killed in South Sudan’s Jonglei state after fighters allied to the government allegedly lured villagers from their homes with promises of food aid, survivors told the AP. Witnesses said dozens of gunmen arrived in trucks, announced an aid registration over loudspeakers, gathered residents in a cattle hut in Pankor, bound several men’s hands, and opened fire, killing up to 22 people, including women and children. Ayod County’s government-appointed commissioner blamed Agwelek militia fighters, said some had been arrested and disarmed, and disputed that victims were tricked with aid.
