If Zelenskyy is warning us that Russia might attack the Baltics, I think he probably has a pretty good reason. As a Balt, I am surprised that many of us are treating Zelenskyy’s warning with contempt, while I myself understand where he is coming from.
Some accuse Zelenskyy of spreading narratives that help Russia. Well, I very much doubt he is trying to help Russia, and I don’t think he would take that risk lightly.
Some say he is pushing a fake scare story to focus the West’s attention on supporting Ukraine. But Ukraine has been deprived of that support for a long time, and has unfortunately learnt to live without it. I don’t think he is playing games. I find it more likely that he is offering his honest analysis to his friends.
Anybody feeling instinctive anger whenever the issue of a possible Russian attack against a Baltic State is raised should have a think about these three questions:
1. Are we sure Putin has no good reasons to attack NATO? He only needs one, and it doesn’t need to be as ambitious as a full invasion and annexation. He might be thinking that a small incursion could fracture our alliance and reboot his popularity at home by providing a win for his war machine. He could use his reserves or divert some troops from Ukraine, which he sees is a much harder nut to crack than the Baltics. Are we certain that he isn’t even tempted to try?
2. If not the Baltics, then where? Even though the Baltic States have raised defence spending as a percentage of GDP to the highest levels in NATO, we remain vulnerable while the effect of that boost comes online. We have no conscription like the Finns, the German brigade won’t be here for at least a year, our militaries are less developed than other potential NATO targets, so why wouldn’t Putin choose us?
3. And are we 100% certain that Article 5 is still deterring Russia as much as it used to? Even if we still believe in the “ironclad commitment” of our allies, any expert would have to admit that some of our main allies are somewhat distracted right now while others have only recently started rebuilding their militaries. Should Putin wait until Europe gets stronger? Or until US attention returns to Europe?
Zelenskyy has good reason to doubt that the West would suddenly experience a surge of bravery if a second country in the East were attacked now, NATO member or not.
So I’m sorry, but this is why I see where Zelenskyy is coming from. The Baltics could be the target, Putin might be tempted, and our allies are currently in a tough spot. The window of opportunity is open.
My suggestion to my fellow Baltic statesmen is this: Instead of getting flustered, get ready.
Prepare contingency plans, learn Ukrainian survival techniques fast, and think about how to quickly extend the Ukrainian defence umbrella over the Baltic Sea — if indeed the merde does hit the ventilator.

This is my one and only statement about fake CAT-7 tourniquets being brought into Ukraine and handed to soldiers.

If you knowingly distribute counterfeit or unsafe tourniquets in Ukraine, and their failure causes a soldier’s or civilian’s death, you can face criminal investigation and prosecution. Causing death through negligence is a criminal offence under Ukrainian law.

And once medics have warned you that the equipment is unsafe, you cannot pretend you did not know the risk.

It is 2026. We should not still be debating tourniquets.

Volunteers have a responsibility to provide equipment that saves lives, not equipment that leaves survival up to chance.

Being a volunteer does not make you a medical professional.

It does not give you the right to experiment on soldiers.

And it does not give you the right to hand out equipment that may fail in combat.
We are not your test subjects.

We are not your marketing tools.

The battlefield is not your product-testing laboratory.

If you want to argue that a soldier’s life is not worth the difference between a fake tourniquet and a genuine $26 CAT, it’s time you hang up your hat and stop “helping” the military.

I’m not debating this anymore.

On August 24th 1991 Ukraine declared independence from the Soviet Union. Shortly after, Ukraine 🇺🇦 and Slovenia 🇸🇮 recognized each other as independent states.

3 months later, the Ukrainian people voted on its independence in a referendum. 92.25% voted for, 7.75% voted against. Slovenia scored similar voting results on independence referendum a year earlier.
We had to defend our independence against Yugoslav communist army aggression in June and July 1991. Ukraine is fighting now. With all our support and sympathy ❤️‍🩹.

This also concerns something as basic as human conduct: continuing business as usual, to shake hands with the Russians and behaving as though nothing is happening, discussing routine agenda items as if there were no genocidal war raging in the very heart of Europe is sending an absolutely wrong message. Europe is sleepwalking into an extremely dangerous period.

The period between the summer of 2027 and early 2029 will likely be the most dangerous window for Western security in decades, and Europe is currently failing to properly prepare for it.

Europe and Taiwan have less than twelve months to get ready for a massive storm that could erupt by the summer of 2027.

The upcoming French elections represent a massive, overlooked vulnerability for European defense.

Polling trends highlight a strong probability of a far-right victory, which would place Le Pen in the Élysée Palace. She has historically aligned with Moscow, opposing sanctions on Russia and military aid to Ukraine. Such a shift would effectively remove the EU's only nuclear power from NATO's collective defense equation (at least when it comes to Russia).

Combined with Trump’s unreliability, Europe could quickly find itself without a nuclear shield or a reliable guarantor of conventional security. The UK can’t do much alone. Russia is aware of this timeline. Moscow's ongoing mobilization plans aim to generate fresh combat units capable of pressing the offensive in Ukraine while simultaneously threatening NATO's northeastern flank. However, no decision has been made yet.

If Beijing decides to move on Taiwan during the exact window, the West will be caught in a two-front squeeze it simply cannot supply. European countries and the US lack the production and munition reserves to handle a long war, let alone two simultaneous crises. Trump also can’t be relied on.

To prevent a catastrophe, European leaders must act before the political window closes. The most critical immediate step is seizing Russia's frozen assets and transferring them directly to Ukraine to ensure Kyiv can sustain its defense (before French elections).

European capitals must also accelerate defense procurement immediately. Waiting another year to take this threat seriously guarantees that we will face it unprepared
