I think this Marineford panel gets misunderstood a lot. Mihawk talking about the “true distance” (本当の距離) between Whitebeard and everyone else doesn’t necessarily mean he was admitting inferiority. He was more likely referring to Whitebeard’s level, presence, status, and how difficult he was to reach through his commanders. Mihawk attacking right after also suggests he wanted to test Whitebeard himself, not simply see himself below him. If Mihawk truly saw himself as beneath Whitebeard, I doubt he would’ve made that move at all. This scene mainly hypes Whitebeard, not downscales Mihawk.
