There is no point doing the right thing any more in the UK.
There's absolutely no point sitting in an office for 90%+ of office jobs. You don't build those precious in-person relationships at work. Those people aren't your friends, they're your colleagues.
"Mentorship" is pretty much non-existent and can easily be done online.
Most people with office jobs are just pretending to be productive for eight hours a day, hiding in the bathroom watching TikToks, and taking endless coffee and smoke breaks.
If you're among the minority doing something genuinely interesting and important that requires deep focus, having other people around is usually just a distraction. Of course, if you want to go into the office because there are like-minded people there, be my guest. But for most people, that's not the case. It's a massive waste of time and resources when you factor in the commute, etc.
It should be completely optional.
BOOMER DAD: “You never discuss your salary with coworkers.”
ME: “I compared pay with someone on my team.”
BOOMER DAD: “That’s unprofessional.”
ME: “He was making $16,000 more than me. Same title. Same workload.”
BOOMER DAD: “That’s between the company and the employee.”
ME: “I used that info to renegotiate.”
BOOMER DAD: “You just got fortunate.”
ME: “No. I got informed.”
A month later, I was making $12,000 more a year.
Keeping salaries secret doesn’t protect workers.
It protects companies from uncomfortable conversations.
