Canadians need to understand what actually happened with the U.S. trade fight.
Most countries facing Trump’s tariffs sat down early, negotiated quietly, and protected their market access. Mexico did this from day one. They absorbed the insults, made targeted concessions, kept talking, and today about 85% of their exports still enter the U.S. tariff-free. They never turned it into a domestic political show.
Canada and China were the outliers. We chose visible retaliation and “Elbows Up” campaigning instead of early, serious negotiation.
Steel and aluminum timeline:
• March 2025: U.S. hits us with 25%. We retaliate.
• June 2025: U.S. raises it to 50%. We don’t match it.
• Fourteen months of rhetoric, ads, photo-ops, and delayed serious talks later: the rate is reportedly heading back toward 25%.
That’s not a victory. That’s a long, expensive trip back to where the problem started — after jobs were lost, businesses strained, plants hesitated to invest, and taxpayers propped up industries.
The Liberals ran on the image of the only people who could stand up to Trump. Early quiet deals would have looked like weakness to their base. So they prolonged the fight for political optics, framed it as crisis management, and only shifted to “stick-handling” once the economic damage became politically costly.
Mexico treated the United States as its biggest customer and negotiated accordingly. Ottawa treated the dispute as a campaign stage.
Result: we absorbed more pain, burned more time, and are now bargaining from a weaker position. Returning to “Ground Zero” after all that damage is not parity. It’s a net loss.
You don’t win trade wars with press conferences and slogans. You win them at the table — early, pragmatically, and without turning your own workers into collateral for domestic messaging.
That’s what happened. Canadians deserved better than a year of theatre followed by managed retreat.

In December, 2020, Alberta's US union allies leaked to me information they had obtained from the Biden Transition Team that he planned on abrogating the KXL Presidential Permit as his first Executive Order, immediately following the inauguration.

They (our US union allies) urged me to get PM Trudeau to call then President-elect Biden to stress that this would be unacceptable to Canada, and to ask - at the very least - to delay a final decision until we could discuss KXL with the new Administration.

I immediately passed the urgency of this onto PM Trudeau, pointing out that KXL would be worth a $35 billion annual lift to Canadian exports, would create thousands of high paying jobs, and generate tens of $ billions in government revenue over time.

Trudeau refused to lift a finger.

No call made. No message sent.

And when Biden signed the EO on January 20, 2021, zero complaint was registered by the Government of Canada. The message sent was "let's just move on to cooperate on climate policy and a progressive trade agenda."

So it's a little ironic to hear "elbows up" rhetoric from some of the folks who were eager to surrender our vital economic interests contra Joe Biden's assault on Canada.

A high-risk sex offender was charged with trespassing Aug. 12 after a person saw a stranger in their backyard at night.

He was released(!); 5 days later he was arrested *again* after a person reported a stranger IN THEIR APARTMENT.

When he was previously released in 2020 the VPD listed his prior convictions:

The backlash was immediate. His management pulled him from his role in "Jesus Christ Superstar" at the London Palladium. He split from his record label. Then some of his own band members started questioning whether they'd perform the song with him.

His answer was simple: anyone who won't play it is out of the band.

Artists get praised constantly for speaking up about injustice - unless the victims are Israeli. Boy George already paid for refusing to accept that double standard. He's not backing down now.

Jewish communities remember who stood beside them when it actually cost something.
