I think we need to be extremely concerned about the Twitter arsonists who will complain about the election results next week, assuming they go the way of the Dems. Elon and his minions are going to do everything they can to claim that various elections were rigged/stolen/etc. They're doing it today with Brazil, and they'll do it next week with the US midterms.
And this is fundamentally why I'm so opposed to reflexive populism. It's a fire that eventually consumes everything. There is no evidence that Lula stole the election in Brazil, but that hasn't stopped people from saying it was stolen. If the truth doesn't matter, then what's the point of anything? Everyone can just lie and nothing matters, and we spiral into nihilism.
Shit, the bots have found me again. Gonna mute all conversations from the post that are triggering them again. Yes, it has to do with Starlink/StarShield.
I saw the most toxic shitpoasters of Twitter generation destroyed by end of word limits, blathering hysterical naked, dragging themselves through Truth Social looking for an angry fix, combover-headed boomers burning for the ancient heavenly connection to perfect rage-bait.
Seven months ago, there was a big conversation about whether Trump was denying blue states FEMA aid for partisan reasons.
Since May, there have been 57 more disaster relief decisions. Requests from blue states are still 2.8x more likely to be rejected than from red states.
Bolsonaros embrace of Trump hurt him at the polls.
Orban and Vucic also suffered from too close association with a very unpopular American president.
It’s becoming an international trend.
The Trump brand will fade even further once he becomes a lame duck.
If you're going to overthrow democracy, you need to at least be competent.
Bukele took a country that was a war zone and brought the greatest collapse in crime in recent history.
In Brazil, murder was actually higher under Bolsonaro than under Lula. Growth under Lula has been higher than it was under Bolsonaro, even if you exclude Covid.
Brazilian rightists don't seem to have a good reason for wanting to install authoritarianism under Bolsonaro family rule. They can't argue that Lula has led the country to disaster.
They just want to win. And that's not good enough.
I feel like this is what happened with Bush near the end too. Saw his legacy as foreign policy and stopped caring about other things. But Trump cares about foreign policy and also his own corruption and construction projects.
From the war's start, pro-Putin lobby doesn't simply stab Ukraine in the back, but insists on doing so while wrapping themselves in the mantle of pure virtue: demanding end of aid, helping Putin kill kids - they only do it because they want peace more than Ukranians do, you see
It's anti-democratic to want voting rules enforced neutrally & equally? Is that really the argument you want to make? Why bother having timed elections at all?
Lula and Moraes have spent several years engaged in absurd levels of corruption. They have stolen money, locked up political opponents, ordered silencing of critics etc.
They were never going to give up power easily. You can vote communists in. Much harder to vote them out.
