In 2007, Lynn Hersey took over as the head coach of a 4-21 Smith College basketball team, looking to reset the culture.
Nearly 20 years later, Hersey's program is a Division 3 powerhouse, built on developing women far beyond basketball.

Frank Martin's coaching persona is well-known.
There are fewer stories on how he grew into that persona in his hometown of Miami.
For my final @MDC_Sports story, I sought to discover how Frank became Frank, and that meant looking to the 305:

@MDCollegian senior columns came out yesterday, and i decided to use mine to detail a mental struggle that arose in college and the continuous learning process that’s come from it.

UMass G Donovan Brown has entered the transfer portal and is seeking another year of eligibility, he tells me.
Brown played in 16 games for the Minutemen, averaging 0.8 PTS, 0.4 AST and 25% from 3PT
Brown was a 20+ PPG scorer at the D2 level as well.
"[I want to] finish the job that I was asked to do here, provide the school a conference championship, to provide the school the opportunity to play the postseason basketball. I get it; We're not there yet, but I'm really excited about who we've got, who's coming"
- Frank Martin
"The continuity of those programs at the top [of the MAC], those rosters aren't changing a lot. That in this day and age is really rare, and we've got to figure out what that combination, that mechanism, is, to get that, because I think that will help us."
- Ryan Bamford
He followed up with this:
"The program has moved forward in a number of ways that I think sometimes you take for granted. Things academically, things in the community, the type of young men that he's brought here."
He also noted the wins against Miami and Ohio to end the year.
“Last year, I did a you-know-what job, and that's not acceptable. This year, we finished in eighth place. There's an adjustment period with the MAC.”
“The A-10 and the MAC are two leagues that are played completely differently.”
- Frank Martin
“[A MAC Championship is] what we're trying to build towards, and we're not going to stop until we do. I have a tremendous amount of resolve that that's going to be the outcome, and I look forward to continuing to invest in Frank and his program to meet those standards”
- Bamford
UMass basketball head coach Frank Martin will hold an end-of-season press conference at the Mullins Center on Monday, March 23 at 1 p.m.
He will be joined by AD Ryan Bamford.
Daniel Hankins-Sanford and Dimitri Clerc both practiced today for UMass and will be active on Thursday to begin the MAC Tournament, according to Frank Martin.
Allie Palmieri’s path to UMass started in a driveway — one that went from unused to never going dark
That driveway launched a journey through transfers, injuries and uncertainty, but her dedication to the game never wavered
