What IS significant is the DISTRIBUTION. Seriously. It’s ridiculous 🤣

Papergames’ first dedicated legal update moved BEYOND company and gaming-community channels and was considered sufficiently newsworthy to circulate through multiple ESTABLISHED Chinese general-news, business and financial-media platforms, several of which operate within state-backed or state-affiliated media structures.

The mainstream coverage has overwhelmingly focused on the concrete legal results, particularly the Love and Deepspace account case and the prison sentences handed down.

Papergames Legal’s broader statement also says that legal action concerning copyright and trademark infringement, unfair competition, game leaks, malicious insults and rumours targeting Papergames and its players, and other infringements is continuing, with relevant cases currently progressing through judicial proceedings (please see the quote-tweet in the first part of this post for more details).

The media coverage does NOT establish that those ongoing cases are connected to Ao Yin/Valko or the current LADS community conflict, and Papergames has not publicly made that connection.

➤ This does NOT prove government direction or intervention, but given the wider context surrounding Papergames this summer, I think the pattern is worth watching.

Following Papergames Legal’s publication of “叠纸游戏打击多种侵权行为取得阶段性进展” (Papergames Games Makes Phased Progress in Combating Multiple Forms of Infringement) on 17/09, the announcement was rapidly carried outside of Papergames’ own channels and into broader Chinese news and financial media.

Sina News, one of China’s major commercial online news platforms (private organisation), published the story under the topics # 叠纸游戏维权进展 (Papergames Games’ Progress in Protecting Its Rights) and # 恋与深空账号非法租售案多人获刑 (Multiple People Sentenced in Illegal Love and Deepspace Account Rental and Sales Case).

Its coverage particularly highlighted the Love and Deepspace criminal case in which defendants illegally obtained large quantities of citizens’ personal information, mass-registered game accounts and used plug-ins to operate those accounts for profit.

The defendants received prison sentences ranging from 1 year and 3 months to 4 years and 5 months.

However, Bandao explicitly attributes the material to Xiaoxiang Morning Herald / 潇湘晨报 and names its own editorial and review staff. Xiaoxiang itself operates within Hunan’s provincial state-media structure.

This therefore represents another example of the story spreading through the broader state-affiliated CN media ecosystem, rather than a completely separate piece of original reporting.

They didn’t cave to CDG. They were standing their ground regarding Valko right until the 29th.

The ONLY REASON Valko was pulled is because the online smear campaign by rivals was successful and Valko was successfully linked to a horrifically anti-China topic. It crossed a political red line.

Now, they’ve somewhat rehabilitated their own image, have successfully been endorsed by the state and now have their legal department’s account set up to better handle any similar controversy that may pop up in the future.
