After initial shock and paralysis at Nazi Germany’s invasion of the Soviet Union, Joseph Stalin oversaw the relocation of over 1500 factories east of the Ural Mountains, saving Soviet industry and building the foundation of the war effort.

During the Battle of Moscow, when German forces came within 25-30KM of the city, Stalin refused to evacuate the city and relocate his government.

Panic had been building among civilians in Moscow, Stalin’s decision to stay in the Kremlin overwhelmingly boosted morale as it became clear that the Soviet state would not collapse and that the capital would be defended at all costs.

250,000-300,00 Red Army soldiers died defending Moscow and preventing the Nazis from capturing the city.
