In addition to PlayStation recieving insane backlash from consumers, they're now becoming a meme too.
Companies are satirically mocking their physical announcement and gaining tens of thousands of likes doing so.
Digital only on PC is not the same as digital only on consoles, because PC has always had, and will always have, an army of feral passionate coders, preservationists and straight up pirates whose sole mission is to make everything run offline for everyone on everything.
The craziest thing about this is that, assuming the PS6 is all digital, you won’t even be able to watch movies are play PS4/5 discs on it either.
They’re going to make you buy your whole PS5 library again if you want to play any of it.
I hope y'all realize that the next step is a subscription service. Back in the day you just bought Microsoft Office and you had it forever. Now you rent it monthly. Have fun renting each and every game by the month.
People don’t realize how much this could change the gaming market.
When physical games disappear, it doesn’t just affect collectors. It affects the entire ecosystem around gaming.
Retro game stores? Many of them survive because people still buy, sell, and trade physical games. As physical media declines, some of those stores will have a much harder time staying open.
Collector’s Editions? If everything becomes digital, what’s the incentive? Are people really going to spend $200+ for a few digital cosmetics and a downloadable license? A huge part of what made those editions special was owning something tangible.
And don’t think retro prices won’t be affected. As fewer physical games are produced, the older ones become even more desirable. Supply goes down, demand goes up, and prices climb even higher.
This isn’t just about preferring discs over downloads. It’s about ownership, preservation, accessibility, local game stores, collectors, and the future of gaming as a whole.
There’s so much more at stake than people realize, and I don’t think the long term impact is good. #supportphysicalmedia
what sucks is that you can still buy physical media for movies and music. you can still buy a CD for new albums! the options are still there. it's wild to just be like "no options from now on"
We remember Sony's brilliantly brutal "This is how you share your games on PS4" video, as PlayStation kills discs 13 years later: https://t.co/Rv7qi8aPj3
Exactly. The music industry has moved to digital, we all know that. But at least the choice is still there.
I get physical games don't sell as well, but they can just produce less copies, not completely eliminate it.
I hope everyone understands that if we let Sony get away with this, there will be no turning back.
Our options will be more limited than they've ever been. Even those who buy digital, understand this will ultimately be bad for everyone.
The PlayStation 6 will not have a disc drive. It will be an entirely digital console and I imagine that Xbox will follow suit.
Game ownership will soon be a thing of the past. I’d say vote with your wallets but the reality is that it won’t matter. It’s a tragedy.
You'll pay the same price as before except now you won't own shit! No discs, just empty boxes with codes. When playstation removes your games from the catalog like they are in the process of doing with 500 paid movies you'll get nothing. You'll own nothing.
this is genuinely the worst news i have heard. no more sharing games with your friends, no more buying games second hand, no more OWNING your own games. fuck you playstation
Let’s sum things up recently with PlayStation
- Increased PS5 Prices
- Removed over 500 movies/TV shows from PS Store
- Still wants to Focus on live service games after a whole generation of failure with them
- Closed Bluepoint
- Stop Disc Production in Jan 2028
What a joke…
