The wall-to-wall coverage of the Strait of Hormuz has been consistent: it’s closed, and the world is on the brink of catastrophe.

But what does “closed” actually mean?

Because on the ground, the reality looks very different.

@citrini sent someone directly into the region—through Oman, onto a locally piloted boat—to see it firsthand. What he found was not an empty strait. It was active. Ships are moving. In some cases, they’re even rerouting—but they’re still getting through. Notably, a number of Chinese vessels continue to pass.

So why does the global narrative lack this nuance?

Because much of modern reporting relies on a single system: AIS (Automatic Identification System) data. And here’s the problem: there’s an entire “shadow fleet” of ships that either go dark or spoof their locations. Thousands of vessels operating outside that visibility.

So if your lens is AIS… you’re only seeing part of the picture.

And this points to something bigger.

In the name of efficiency, we’re increasingly outsourcing our understanding of the world to single data sources, centralized narratives, and now, even AI systems.

But truth is often less efficient.

It requires friction. It requires verification. Sometimes, it requires going there yourself.

That’s the difference between consuming information… and actually understanding reality.

@GadiAleks @Techslut אם הדת הייתה נשארת במתחם לא עשינו רע לאף אחד, הכל טוב. בפועל, דת תמיד מגיעה למקום של 'כולכם חייבים לעשות כמוני בשביל שלי יהיה טוב'. מה שטוב לאחד לא בהכרח טוב לכולם ולפעמים רע לאחר, לדוגמא תחבורה ציבורית בשבת, נשים בצבא, הרבנות בגירושין.
