The Congo River 🇨🇩 is the world’s deepest river. Its extraordinary volume of water holds enough hydropower potential to generate electricity to power all of Africa.
JUST IN: President TINUBU has moved Nigeria’s Digital Free Zones plan to the next stage. The goal is to attract global investment, create more jobs and help Nigerian tech companies grow without moving abroad. The government wants the full plan launched within 180 days.
FEDERAL GOVERNMENT CLEARS ₦18.96bn PHCN PENSION ARREARS
The Federal Government says it has fully cleared the 18.96 billion naira in pension arrears owed to retirees of the defunct Power Holding Company of Nigeria.
A statement by the Finance Minister and Coordinating Economy, Taiwo Oyedele confirms that the Pension Transitional Arrangement Directorate (PTAD) has paid the final 50 percent balance of 9.48 billion naira to 3,958 eligible pensioners under the Defined Benefit Scheme.
It notes that it follows the first tranche of a similar amount paid in June 2026 to 3,959 pensioners, bringing the total disbursed to 18.96 billion naira.
The statement explains that the slight difference between both tranches was due to the death of one pensioner after the first payment.
The Minister states that the payment is a demonstration of the government's resolve to clear inherited pension liabilities and ensure verified entitlements are settled and commended PTAD for diligently coordinating the exercise.
The late President Muhammadu Buhari would have been so pleased. Throughout the process, he made himself available to answer every question and provide clarification. He even travelled to Paris to testify and defend Nigeria and that became his last formal public engagement. May Allah (SWT) continue to bless his legacy, reward his service to Nigeria, forgive his shortcomings, and grant him Al-Jannatul Firdaus. Ameen. 🤲🏽
The first time I saw Jacob Olu in a movie was as a child. He played a customs officer in Dogs of War, but back then, I didn’t know who he was. I only paid attention to Gyearbuor Asante because of his lines in Twi Yes, hearing Twi in a movie starring Christopher Walken was special
ICC CASE: AB SUNRISE POWER AND TRANSMISSION COMPANY LIMITED (SUNRISE) V. FEDERAL GOVERNMENT OF NIGERIA (NIGERIA) V. MR. LENO ADESANYA
An International Arbitration Tribunal under the auspices of the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) in Paris, today, September 17, 2026, issued an award in favour of our country, rejecting the claims in the arbitration instituted by Sunrise Power and Transmission Company Ltd (Sunrise).
The company had made a claim against the Federal Republic of Nigeria, demanding $680 million as a settlement sum and interest in respect of another arbitration in which it is claiming over $2.7 billion in compensation and interest relating to disputes associated with the development of the 3960mw Mambila Hydroelectric Power Project, located in Taraba State.
This latest decision affirms the Nigerian State's determination not to succumb to predatory and exploitative claims by corrupt local and international entities and their enablers and funders.
On behalf of the Government and People of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, I strongly commend the tremendous efforts of the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Prince Lateef Fagbemi and the entire team at the Federal Ministry of Justice for their efforts in this matter.
I also commend the FRN defence team, led by Ms Elizabeth Oger-Gross and Mr Tolu Obamuroh, both of Paul Hastings LLP, for their professional and excellent defence of the country.
I commend the patriotism and support of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, GCFR, and late President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, who testified in the case, which dated back to an illegal 2003 contract to build a 3,050-megawatt hydroelectric plant in Taraba State under a build-operate-transfer model. The Federal Executive Council never authorised the contract.
I thank the other witnesses in this case, including former Ministers Babatunde Raji Fashola, SAN, and Suleiman Adamu, and the experts, for their active participation in defending Nigeria's interest in the arbitration.
I commend the National Security Adviser for his support and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission @officialEFCC for its investigation into the case.
I want to assure you that while our country remains committed to partnering with genuine investors and honouring its legal obligations, it will continue to defend all opportunistic claims instituted against our commonwealth strongly.
Today's ICC ruling clears the single biggest legal hurdle that has paralysed the Mambilla hydro power project for years.
God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
PRESIDENT BOLA AHMED TINUBU,

Nigeria Wins $2.35bn Arbitration Battle Against Sunrise Power As ICC Tribunal Dismisses Claim
The International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) tribunal in Paris has ruled in favour of Nigeria in the $2.35 billion arbitration dispute involving Sunrise Power over the Mambilla hydropower project.
The tribunal dismissed Sunrise Power’s claim that Nigeria breached its obligations under a settlement agreement and addendum. It also rejected the company’s demand for $400 million, comprising a $200 million settlement sum and a $200 million default payment.
Sunrise Power and its promoter, Leno Adesanya, were ordered to reimburse Nigeria 75% of the legal fees and expenses incurred during the arbitration, amounting to $11.82 million. The arbitration costs were fixed at $1.656 million, with Sunrise and Adesanya responsible for 75% and Nigeria 25%.
The dispute dates back to a 2003 agreement for Sunrise Power to construct the 3,050MW Mambilla hydropower project in Taraba State under a $6 billion build-operate-transfer arrangement.
In 2017, Sunrise began arbitration proceedings against Nigeria, seeking about $2.354 billion over the alleged breach of the 2003 agreement. The company later pursued another $400 million claim linked to a 2020 settlement agreement.
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo had said he never authorised the 2003 contract, while former President Muhammadu Buhari said he refused to approve the proposed 2020 settlement because he believed there was no basis for Sunrise’s claim.
The latest ICC ruling therefore leaves Sunrise’s $2.35 billion claim dismissed, while Nigeria is set to recover a substantial portion of its legal costs.
Tinubu go France go “chill” and one week later, Nigeria won a long standing international case at the ICC in Paris.
- $2.35bn potential claims saved
- 3000MW of electricity supply now in sight.
What a way to go “rest” in France.
