When it arrived in Europe, this piece underwent a transformation. European 'civilization' could not assimilate this piece, which was the most powerful weapon in the Middle East and India, and instead changed both its meaning and shape to represent its bishops.
The original piece, representing the elephant, is as shown in the photograph. Its current form, representing the bishop, has a slit in the middle like a bishop's hat.
There is a vast history here. Did you know that this is the history of colonialism and theft of Western 'civilization'? Let me briefly explain.
One of the chess pieces that underwent the most significant visual change is the Bishop. Chess, or rather its precursor known as "Shatranj" in the Sassanid Empire, was originally called "Alfil" or "Pīl" before it spread from the Middle East and India to Europe. This piece represented elephants, one of the greatest weapons of the time, and had two protrusions at the top, reminiscent of elephant tusks, representing the two long tusks found on elephants.
