Today I join others from across our game and call for Gianni Infantino to resign as FIFA President.

Infantino has debased the office that he promised to elevate. He has lied, deceived and tried to feather his own nest at the expense of the game he is supposed to serve. 

He has lost the support of his senior staff, his closest advisers, the vast majority of people who devote their lives to this sport and even, it would seem, the FIFA Peace Prize winner. 

It is too late to save his dignity but it is not too late to save football. He should go. Now.

*AQUAurus: A long overdue concept*

1. More than 60% of Ghana's surface water is polluted.

2. So much so that the country's main water utility, GWCL, now uses synthetic polymers more suited to industrial wastewater treatment to clean water from natural sources.

3. The pollution is driven by indiscriminate mining, agrochemical use, discharge of urban waste etc.

4. I argue, however, that the current practice of GWCL paying nothing for the water it fetches to sell is a major factor. Hear me out.

5. GWCL has no incentive, nor the resources really, to invest in better policing of the water resources in the country. Because the price of water has been regulated to the floor, GWCL simply moans to the security services to protect the water sources.

6. We propose the AQUAurus protocol as an approach of dramatically re-valuing water resources in Ghana. We believe that this is an urgent measure to avert the massive catastrophe on the way.

7. Anyone who scans the market would have realised that beverage companies have been struggling to maintain supply consistency. Meanwhile, chemicals, including mercury from gold mining, in water are starting to damage human health.

8. The undervaluation of water resources is a major input into Ghana's gold boom. 80% of gold produced comes from surface mining. Nearly half of this gold is cleaned by simply diverting natural water courses. Only the big, sophisticated, mines build their own ponds and water treatment facilities. The rest just divert the water and splash for free!

9. The zero cost of water has boosted surface mining and enabled Ghana to outstrip countries that are yet to allow the kind of indiscriminate open-pit, alluvial, and other forms of surface mining seen in Ghana. Essentially, free water is subsidising part of gold production costs.

10. AQUAurus ("Water is Gold") will change this by immediately empowering the Water Resources Commission (WRC) to charge GWCL for water taken from large bodies of water.

11. The price of water will TRIPLE in Ghana. No joke. A lifeline tariff would, however, cater to the poorest of the poor.

12. The massive prices will cause an uproar. Water policy will finally become political. The middle-classes shall stop taking the precious fluid for granted.

13. GWCL will pay WRC for the percentage of actual water in each cubic meter of turbid fluid pumped out of the major water bodies. WRC would now have a major incentive to invest some of the money it makes selling raw water to police and husband the resource. Helicopter patrols etc will all come in. The intermittent and half-hearted use of drones today is a waste of time since there is often no response capacity.

14. WRC will start concessioning some of the water bodies to contractors to manage and sell onwards. That is how competition will eventually bring down prices.

15. Finally, a tokenised system will be created. Water is a special mineral in that it is not primarily subsurface. Water reserves can thus be monitored to a square meter remotely. Remote-sensing algorithms can hence also track the quality of each concession and reprice tokens linked to them.

16. In short, citizens can both invest small amounts into water ownership whilst also monitoring quality. Different concessionaires will invest close to the frontline to secure water bodies they've leased from WRC against galamseyers, reckless miners, and other polluters.

17. The tragedy of water commons can be reversed. But we must ACT NOW. Latest by tomorrow morning.
