Because all great whales (also known as Baleen whales) have two blow holes, both Humpback whales and southern right whales in particular have a very distinct V-shaped blow.
This is a large maternal humpback pictured Sunday morning 8/11/2020 ๐
Comment from one of our beautiful regulars Carole Carroll about todayโs whales: โThe little Humpabck calf started splashing a little way off today but then Mum must have told him to settle down ๐ beautiful morning out, some gorgeous tails on displayโ Pics: Wayne O'Meara
Within these two pictures you can really see the throat pleats on the underside of this Humpback. These pleats are what expand during feeding and allow the whale to take in 19000L of water, then filter out the rest of the food through their baleen and swallow the remaining food
Ancestral mammals returned to the ocean around 60-50 million years ago, evolving into our current day marine mammals. During this evolutionary process and despite the apparent uselessness of legs, these vestigial limbs can still be seen in the modern whale today! How cool! ๐
โOne of my favourite parts during a tour is when the whales head towards/away from the boat at a perpendicular angle to it, you can really see their width then! Like buses heading towards the boatโ ๐ - Brooke our marine biologist
We have some gorgeous prints for sale on board during our whale watching trips ranging from just $10-$30 taken by our skipper! How good ๐๐ Also @millscharters hats for $10!
Yesterday arvo was incredible! Mum teaching bub how to breach, multiple different breaches throughout the day and chin slapping! What is weird is that on a sunset tour on the same day last year all of this happened! Pics from last year which is identical to yesterdayโs events! ๐
