@punk_iv Agreed - my great uncle is in that photograph. He was a miner from Stoke-on-Trent who volunteered & had a “good war” earning the MM & Bar.
@DrainTheComex Also note the life jackets for crossing the canal. Most of the men could not swim & so in the areas with no footbridges, the officers swam over first dragging ropes for the rest to follow.
@FennellJW@John_ForemanCBE Agreed - my great uncle is in that photograph & had earned the MM & Bar by then. The rolling barrage worked perfectly, they were fortunate with the fog & it was a remarkable victory.
Today I had the honour to lay the Armed Forces Bill in Parliament!
Here’s a little bit of what’s in it ⬇️
Defence Housing Service.
- Creating a professional body to oversee and manage all Defence housing. This will ensure £9 billion invested by this Labour government is spent most effectively to meet the needs of service families.
Reserves.
- Readiness and resilience for this era of growing threats.
- Simplifying the Reserves system. Making it easier for people to leave and seamlessly join the Reserves, and then rejoin regular service (zig zag careers).
- Extending the ability for Reserves to serve until they’re 65.
- Equalising the Recall Reserve so that everyone across the Army, Navy, and Air Force have the same liability regardless of rank. This means, from the point of leaving the military, you can be recalled for up to 18 years, or until you’re 65, whichever comes first. This change will only affect those that are still serving. Those that have already left service can opt in. Details to follow post bill.
Better Support.
- Enshrining the covenant fully into law.
- Expanding the duty from 3 to 14 Departments/Policy areas.
Better Protections.
- Enhancing the Service Justice System.
- Giving victims of serious crime greater flexibility and greater voice in choosing the Service Justice System or the Civilian Justice System.
- Enhancing the Service Justice System’s ability to deal with domestic violence, and violence against women and girls.
Thousands of members of the @CanadianForces are spending Christmas away from home – standing on guard for our freedoms, and those of our allies.
In this increasingly dangerous and divided world, we are ever more grateful for your service and sacrifice. Merry Christmas.

Time is running out following @I_W_M’s decision to close the Lord Ashcroft Gallery.
Visit while you still can, to honour the bravery of those who risked so much to protect our great nation.
🙏🕊️ Around 50 political prisoners were released in Belarus today following the visit of a US delegation.
Each release is a step in the right direction. This process must continue until every political prisoner is free.
If we had closed the skies over Ukraine in 2022, Russia‘s war wouldn’t have lasted a year.
It’s never too late to do the right thing. Start with #SkyShieldNow
A forceful speech by Poland 🇵🇱 FM @radeksikorski prior to the by now famous 🇺🇳 vote on the 🇷🇺 aggression against 🇺🇦, where 🇺🇸 supported 🇷🇺 against 🇺🇦 and 🇪🇺.
This is the best summary of the current geopolitical situation I have seen. Sir Alex Younger was head of MI6 between 2014 and 2020. Really worth watching.
Speaking about support for Belarusians, @Tsihanouskaya stressed at #MSC2025:
"Yesterday, President @ZelenskyyUa said that the borders of Europe must lay on the eastern borders of Belarus. So don't exclude Belarus. Don't build a new Iron Curtain between Europe and our country".
