woke up to @nearpod deleting all of my presentations, including the ones for the rest of my AP Art History course, three weeks before the exam. Seriously @nearpod ?
Faculty friends, we are 12 months into a pandemic. Your students are not trying to trick you, they are in distress. They need your kindness and empathy more than they need training for some hypothetical “real world” where deadlines are immutable and trauma is not acknowledged.
This year, we have proven SATs and ACTs are unnecessary. Have we reflected on when standardized tests were used to continue segregation after Brown v. Board? Standardized testing contributes to structural racism, and we should turn the entire admissions system upside down.

We celebrated Chinese New Year with a story, dumplings, and dragonfruit. We even practiced using chopsticks! We loved learning about another culture! We were so lucky to have a parent come in and share. @TimberLaneES

I’ve said this before, but if you’re doing an MLK day service project consider bringing King-level analysis to it. Don’t just serve lunch at a soup kitchen, interogate why millions of ppl live in poverty in the first place.
King’s legacy isn’t about charity, it’s about justice.
@iamsamdanish @samsanders@NPRItsBeenAMin As a historian, I’m always frustrated by our collective amnesia. In 1986 there was a film called Soul Man, where someone does blackface to get into Harvard. This act was so disturbingly present in our country. All White people have to contend with our history of white supremacy.
@iamsamdanish @samsanders@NPRItsBeenAMin I never saw blackface growing up in the 80s in Alexandria. I did witness my best friend get called the n-word and it Started me on my path against hate. My parents moving to the DC area was a huge shift, they witnessed a lot of racism.
@notanothermomma@GeorgeHistory It’s tough MJ. Burke’s counselor (U know her, just keeping it anon online) asked us to set more boundaries to help the kids grow. It was so freeing.
Agree 💯 @GeorgeHistory. This year I created more boundaries and structure, even deleting school email app. Now I give both students & family quality focus. Plus, it encourages students to be more independent and process possible answers before jumping to email me.
@GeorgeHistory Yup, being an AP teacher it was hard to leave FB. But, I decided it was worth it for overall well being. I check in with Twitter once in awhile on the computer. Love the sunshine into your life bar! It’s a good one!
@GeorgeHistory That and deleting social media apps have been a game changer.Much more time for my own children and even stress relieving hobbies. I just make sure I give quality attention to students while at school, and things have improved.Of course, having taught 16 years makes this easier.
