Or did he just forgo his love for her out of hunger for control and power? Unlike Saionji, who we clearly see he still cares for and buries those feelings to further his own goals, we never get to see his inner feelings about Nanami

I always find it interesting that we never learn how present touga feels towards Nanami, because despite all signs pointing to him caring for her as children, he’s extremely willing to abuse/manipulate her and sexually groomed her to an extent.

It’s so evil that this didn’t make it into the show. Especially the part about accepting his lot for Nanami’s sake. Touga is such a likable and charming character but so unsympathetic and I think this backstory would have really rounded out his character. It’s canon at least.
