Finished my one year term as President of Mangalore Psychiatric Society. It was filled with monthly meetings focusing on academic discussions on trending topics in #Psychiatry. I thank the Secretary during my term Dr Ganesh Kini for his able support and innovative ideas.
Clients come to therapy all the time asking for a specific kind of treatment that may or may not be clinically indicated.
They may come asking for “couples therapy” when one or both are dealing with a serious MH problem that needs individual treatment. They may (and often do) come looking for a therapy “brand” BEFORE they could possibly understand what’s behind their difficulties, or what real help would look like.
No matter what the client asks for: a psychotherapist has a responsibility to do a clinical assessment, understand the relevant treatment issues, and provide a consultation about what will be clinically helpful for this person and why.
Starting therapy is not like ordering from a diner menu where the client says, “I’ll have one of these and a side of that.”
A clinician is supposed to do a competent clinical assessment, then make specific treatment recommendations based on that assessment. This is what it means to be a trained clinician.
Learnt this from a student colleague today -
काक चेष्टा बको ध्यानं श्वान निद्रा तथैव च।
अल्पाहारी गृहत्यागी विद्यार्थी पंच लक्षणम्॥
Persistent like a crow. Focussed like a heron. Alert even in sleep like a dog. Eats little and leaves home (stops thinking about home and comforts) - these are five (essential) qualities of Vidyarthi (one who is earning knowledge/art/technique. Loosely translated as "student")
When you experience certain unpleasant emotions your brain's smoke alarm goes off but there may not be a fire around you! Have you ever experienced that if you are anxious you think that something will go wrong! That's an example of emotional reasoning. #emotionalintelligence

On the eve of World Mental Health Day 2024, where we try to destigmatize mental illness and start conversations around mental health, this article made my day!
I am quoted in this article on Joker 2 which delves into a rare psychiatric disorder Folie a deux or shared delusional disorder. @MatthewRozsa writes in @Salon how the movie has made an honest attempt to depict this mental illness. #JokerFolieADeux
I argue #JokerFolieADeaux is a masterpiece in my @Salon analysis.
Most people disagree... so you MUST see this in a theater!
That's the only way to enjoy (a) the great movie on screen and (b) the schadenfreude of the audience seething around you. #Joker
