One of the greatly under appreciated aspects of the Reaction Injection Molded (RIM) Cybercab exterior panel manufacturing process is the 100% elimination of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) which is a inescapable part of the painting process as the act of painting a car puts fine particulates into the atmosphere and these need to be safely removed without contaminating the environment.

To do this, massive systems called Regenerative Thermal Oxidizers, or RTOs for short, are required and these massive systems were installed at Giga Texas and Giga Berlin during their original construction to support paint shop operations.

At Giga Berlin, the system is installed exterior to the factory, but at Giga Texas, it was installed inside, taking up a massive amount of space and extending the full height of the building … this is certainly not an ideal use of factory space.

The RIM process @Tesla is using for Cybercab completely eliminates the painting process by injecting the paint directly into the plastic molds, preventing the particulates and ensuring the plastic panels have the color as part of the panel itself.

Here is a set of slides I made way back in April 2021 discussing the RTO’s, how they work, and where they were installed at Giga Berlin and Giga Texas. Eliminating these massive, complex and energy sapping systems is one of the many ways Tesla has optimized Cybercab production and reduces costs to manufacture these cars and frees up factory space for more efficient production of their vehicles.
