Teachers love Admin who:
1) Go above & beyond for their staff
2) Do whatever is needed even small tasks
3) Who are present: in classrooms, hallways, cafeteria, lunchroom
4) Value Teachers time (planning, meetings, after school)
5) Support, encourage and inspire them
Great school leaders are usually characterized by these two things: 1) They support their teachers… always having their back. And 2) They inspire their teachers… continuously reminding them of their core purpose -- making a difference for kids.
It’s good when central office admins remember what it’s like to work in a school. It’s good when school admins remember what it’s like to be a teacher. It’s good when teachers remember what it’s like to be a student. The students… they’re just trying to get through their day.
Students are generally more excited about learning when the teacher is excited about teaching. The engagement of the kids is usually connected to the enthusiasm of the adult.
Our kids are coming to our schools everyday with unmet physical and psychological need. 1 in 5 are hungry, far more than half do not live with both biological parents. They are dealing with things they shouldn’t have to. Are they really just too lazy? #BeTheReason

I don’t think there are many people who wake up with a goal of doing a poor job at work. Most people are doing the best job they know how. It is the leader’s job to take people where they are… and give them the tools, resources, training, and encouragement they need to grow.
5 Ways to build culture:
1) Focus on finding solutions rather than complaining about problems.
2) Collaborate with others in the decision making.
3) Give colleagues the benefit of the doubt.
4) Celebrate little victories.
5) Always keep the focus on students.
I asked my 12 year old nephew who his favorite teacher is. He mentioned a teacher’s name and said: “She is always walking around with a smile...so I think, ‘man, she must enjoy her job.’”
Kids notice.
When I was younger I let a negative colleague affect me so much. I gave her too much power over my happiness! I (essentially) have her my twenties! Don’t give people power over your life! They don’t deserve it!
