“I spent some time in South Korea back then. Because of certain people, I was subjected to hostile looks almost every day. EXO was incredibly popular in Korea at the time, and it felt like almost everyone around me was a fan. After the Chinese members left the group, life was very difficult for me in Korea. There were even people who told me not to go near their lunch boxes because they thought I would steal them. Some of my classmates who were studying abroad also experienced verbal abuse from fans.

Over the years, I have always been grateful to Zhang Yixing. He was going through an incredibly difficult time then. Koreans criticised him for not leaving with the others, while Chinese people accused him of being fake and insincere. Gradually, though, the people around me stopped criticising Zhang Yixing and even started defending him. My roommate even said to me, ‘See? Lay didn’t leave, did he?’
I am genuinely grateful to him. Because he stood firm during those two years, at least I was no longer being called a thief. Thankfully, hard work is not overlooked, and wrongdoing does not go unpunished. Eight years have passed since 2014, and I believe it is much clearer now who was right and who was wrong.

It does not matter why Zhang Yixing chose to stay, whether it was for his promise, the group, or his own interests. What matters is that, in some way, he helped me and many others who were pursuing their dreams in Korea at the time. I will always wish him nothing but the best.”
