Just as sharp-bladed grass,
if wrongly held,
wounds the very hand that holds it–
the contemplative life, if wrongly grasped,
drags you down to hell. (Dhp Niriya Vagga: Hell)

Dwell with your sense faculties guarded, with mindfulness as your protector, with mindfulness as your chief, with your intellect self-protected, endowed with an awareness protected by mindfulness.

I couldn’t sleep. I tossed and turned until 2 a.m., trying to dodge the thoughts attacking me.
At 2:30, I finally gave up, got out of bed, and finished the task I had planned for today so I could send the completed translation to the client as soon as possible.
I think it may be time to quit freelancing for good. It’s been an incredible fifteen years, and I wouldn’t change a thing if it weren’t for these nighttime anxiety attacks.
But if I keep going like this, it will put me in an early grave.

By the way, I wasn’t entirely honest when I said I hadn’t been drawing.
I wasn’t sketching scenes, objects, or anything serious, but I was doodling a lot.
For me, doodling is a quick way to switch off, clear my mind, pause whenever I want, and pick it up again later. It doesn’t demand artistic talent—and it keeps my hand in practice, too.
I hadn’t drawn anything for about three weeks. Depression took its toll, then I got completely caught up in dogsitting for a friend, and eventually I started thinking that maybe I’d simply burned out on drawing and wasn’t much of an artist anyway.
But today I was just sitting there, mindlessly staring at a lonely, slowly dying banana on a plate, when my hands somehow reached for my fineliner and sketchbook on their own.
It’s not perfect. Nothing in this world is. But this is the mark that little banana will leave behind on this page.
Doesn’t really matter, though. I had an absolute blast drawing it — and I’m definitely getting back to sketching.
No, I couldn’t post the lovely lady dog and leave out my most precious little gentleman.
I’ll never find enough words to express how much I love him.
My little pocket-sized companion. ♥️

And here’s the beauty I was dogsitting.
I fell in love.
Now I want a second dog even more, a she-dog this time, but common sense is still winning. For now…
