One of the greatest speeches from Jonathan Sachs in 2020 and it is relevant NOW more than ever.
If you’ve never heard this before then I’d recommend just giving 2 and half minutes of your time.
A must listen and share.
May his memory be a blessing.
This is Tel Aviv in 1909. As you can see, it's just sand and seashells. So how did it become a city?
During the 1880s, under Ottoman rule, Jews started founding new neighborhoods outside of Jaffa due to overcrowding. The first was Neve Tzedek, founded in 1887 by Mizrahi Jews on lands purchased by Aharon Chelouche, an Algerian Jew who moved to the Land of Israel in 1840 and made a fortune trading in gold and silver. He purchased the land from local Arabs.
In 1890 Neve Shalom was founded by Zerah Barnett, a wealthy Lithuanian Jew, who purchased the land with his own money in the same way. Other neighborhoods have similar stories. Notice that they were all founded under Muslim rule on land bought from Muslims.
So when did these neighborhoods become Tel Aviv?
In 1906, 60 Jewish families purchased plots near Jaffa and registered them under the name of Jacobus Kann, a Dutch citizen. The funding came from the Jewish families themselves, who were aided by a loan from the Jewish National Fund.
The town was originally named Ahuzat Bayit ("homestead") but was renamed Tel Aviv in 1910. In 1917, the Ottoman authorities expelled the residents of Jaffa and Tel Aviv as a wartime measure. The Jews returned to the area after the British defeated the Ottomans.
After the war, Tel Aviv became an attraction to immigrants because it offered the comforts they were used to in Europe: electric light, water, cinema, opera, theatre, restaurants... all the good things you couldn't get in a kibbutz.
It received township in 1921, under British rule, and was granted the status of an independent municipality in 1934, after its population swelled due to riots against Jews in Jaffa, forcing many to flee to Tel Aviv, as well as Jews fleeing the rise of Nazism in Europe.
No stolen homes, no stolen land, no stolen money.
Just hardworking people turning desert into prosperity with their own wealth and effort.
Van Gogh painted this in one of the darkest years of his life, and it might be the most hopeful thing he ever made...
The painting is Almond Blossoms, made by Vincent in 1890. Branches of white blossom open against a clear blue sky, and there is nothing sad in it anywhere, which is remarkable, because of when he painted it.
His brother Theo, the person who had loved and supported him his whole life, had just had a son, and named the boy Vincent, after his struggling uncle. When the news reached Van Gogh, he started painting right away.
He chose almond blossom on purpose. In the south of France the almond is the first tree to flower, sometimes as early as February, breaking into blossom while winter is barely over. It is the tree that announces that life is starting again. For a new baby carrying his own name, Van Gogh painted the most beautiful symbol he knew for new life.
He was, at that very moment, seriously ill. This was the period of his breakdowns in the asylum at Saint-Rémy, and not long after finishing the picture he suffered one of his worst attacks and could not paint for weeks. And yet what he made for his nephew has no shadow in it at all. He gathered whatever strength he had and poured all of it into something joyful, a gift for a child he wanted to welcome into the world.
Theo and his wife hung it above the piano in their home, and it stayed one of the most treasured paintings the family owned. The baby it was painted for, Vincent Willem van Gogh, grew up, kept it safe, and went on to found the museum in Amsterdam that holds most of his uncle's work to this day.
This, to me, is what makes the painting extraordinary: a man at the limits of his strength, who would be gone within months, looked at a new life just beginning and painted hope. He reached past everything that was breaking in him and made, for a baby, a picture that says the same thing the almond tree says every year: winter does not get the last word. Something is starting again…
Mark Twain on the Jews essay “Concerning the Jews” (published in Harper’s Magazine, 1899):
«If the statistics are right, the Jews constitute but one per cent of the human race. It suggests a nebulous dim puff of star-dust lost in the blaze of the Milky Way. Properly the Jew ought hardly to be heard of; but he is heard of, has always been heard of. He is as prominent on the planet as any other people, and his commercial importance is extravagantly out of proportion to the smallness of his bulk. His contributions to the world’s list of great names in literature, science, art, music, finance, medicine, and abstruse learning are also away out of proportion to the weakness of his numbers. He has made a marvellous fight in this world, in all the ages; and has done it with his hands tied behind him. He could be vain of himself, and be excused for it. The Egyptian, the Babylonian, and the Persian rose, filled the planet with sound and splendor, then faded to dream-stuff and passed away; the Greek and the Roman followed, and made a vast noise, and they are gone; other peoples have sprung up and held their torch high for a time, but it burned out, and they sit in twilight now, or have vanished. The Jew saw them all, beat them all, and is now what he always was, exhibiting no decadence, no infirmities of age, no weakening of his parts, no slowing of his energies, no dulling of his alert and aggressive mind. All things are mortal but the Jew; all other forces pass, but he remains. What is the secret of his immortality?»
Wow. Got goosebumps listening to this.
What an incredible rendition of @BoyGeorge’s “We Will Dance Again” by British singer “Yamitmusic” on Instagram.
Would love to see even more covers of this.
Thank you to all standing with the Jews during such a dark time. It means the world.

🚨 URGENT: SEARCH INTENSIFIES FOR MISSING ISRAELI MOTHER AND DAUGHTER
Mali Yahalomi, 50, and her daughter Liel, 23, remain missing in Europe, with no contact with their family since Friday.
According to the latest report, the two were expected to catch a flight from Prague, but as check-in nears closing, they have still not arrived.
An Israeli official says an enormous effort is underway to locate them:
“The whole world is on its feet trying to find them.”
Israeli officials, local authorities and Jewish community representatives are involved in the search.
Please share. Every set of eyes could matter.
“I’m just a girl, I have school tomorrow!”
Those were the words 12-year-old Liel Hetzroni pleaded to the Palestinian terrorists who abducted her during the October 7 attack.
They murdered her anyway.
It took forensic investigators nearly six weeks to identify what remained of her. All that was left of the little girl’s body was ash and bone fragments.
Her father, Gavin Heller, told the BBC that Liel and her brother were killed for one reason only: “because they were Jewish.”
He described the identification process: “They just found remnants of Liel… initially they didn’t have enough pieces to make a formal identification. They identified her literally by sieving the remnants. This will unfortunately live with me for the rest of my life.”
Nearly 1,200 people, almost all Jewish Israelis, were massacred that day.
Some called it “justified resistance.” It was the deliberate slaughter of civilians, including children.
Liel Hetzroni was 12 years old.
May her memory be a blessing. #October7 #Hamas #Israel #WeWillNotForget #StandWithIsrael
Indeed.
If Israel is guilty of colonialism, why is Israel the size of New Jersey among a sea of Arab and Muslim states? Who is the colonizer here?
If Israel is guilty of colonialism, why is Israel the only place where Hebrew is spoken?
If Israel committed genocide in Gaza, why has the population in Gaza grown?
If Israel is an apartheid state, why are there anti Israel arab MKs in the Israeli parliament?
If the ‘Palestinians’ want a state, why didn’t they make one when they were given Gaza in 2005 or when the UN gave them one in the partition plan 1947?
If Palestine is a place, where are its borders, what is its national anthem, who is its president, what is its currency, and what is one thing they invented?
If Israel was looking to flatten Gaza and kill all Gazans, and if, according to you, Israel dropped 200,000 bombs on Gaza, and according to you, Israel killed 70,000 people, please help me with the math. How did 200,000 bombs only kill 70,000? Unless they were precision bombs and Israel went to extreme lengths to minimize civilian death. Otherwise the math ain’t mathin.
If Israel was looking to starve Gaza, why send in thousands of trucks packed with food? Why are Gazans obese in their own photos? How is it that the adults are all fat and somehow only the kids are “starving”?
Is this thing on? Any answers to these basic questions?
Just looking for some logical explanations here…
Anyone? Anyone? Bueller? Bueller?
Yea, didn’t think so.
