As someone whose name is Japanese and unfamiliar name to most Americans, I know the feeling of being embarrassed about your name not being common. But, this is so empowering to see a pronunciation guide video for the victims' names. Proud to see the respect and honor they deserve
We have included a pronunciation guide for the Monterey Park victims’ names, which were released by the LA County Dept. of Medical Examiner-Coroner. Special thanks to AAJA members Frances Wang (@FrancesWangTV), Natasha Chen (@NatashaChenCNN), Tiffany Liou (@tliou) and @BenPu_nbc.
As someone who is half-Japanese, it pained me to hear about the recent shootings that occurred during a Lunar New Year festival. My condolences go out to everyone impacted during this event. The community is stronger and closer together- I wish everyone a happy Lunar New Year.
AAJA wishes all who celebrate a safe Lunar New Year. It has been a difficult time for our community and our hearts go out to all who are grieving and healing from the recent shootings in Monterey Park and Half Moon Bay.
Completely agree with this statement about taking time to understand people. It is so important for a journalist to understand the whole story. Empathy is essential in journalism because it allows you to connect with people and gain credibility.
Thought of the Day: Don't judge a book by its cover - take the time to understand the person behind it. This week, I heard a couple of interviews with @stephenasmith and it completely changed my opinion of him. His story of determination in the world of journalism was inspiring.

Please check out @propublica's story about "at least 7,000" Indigenous Peoples' remains found in Illinois State Museum. This story saddened me with what happened, but it didn't shock me- our country still has a lot of work to be done.
In 1927, a chiropractor excavated at least 234 Native American graves and made it a tourist attraction. The state of IL bought it and kept the burial exhibit open until 1992.
Tribal nations have long said the remains should be reburied. Theyre still not.
