I write to express my concern regarding the recent exclusion of chess from the Nigeria 2026 Sports Festival.

It is difficult to understand the reasoning behind this decision. However, sir, it is important to recognize that fostering the development of sports in Nigeria falls within the responsibility of the Commission.

Chess is a globally recognized and intellectually demanding sport. Its exclusion from a national sports festival raises serious concerns about the direction of its development in our country. What provisions have been put in place by the NSC to promote and sustain the growth of chess? At the moment, there appears to be little to none.

Chess is unique compared to many other sports. Talent in chess is not merely innate; it is cultivated over years through practice, passion, dedication, and a strong ecosystem. Unfortunately, this ecosystem cannot thrive without deliberate support and investment from governing bodies.

Countries that excel in chess today have done so through consistent investment and long-term planning. If Nigeria does not prioritize and invest in chess, it will be difficult to achieve meaningful progress or compete at international standards.

I kindly urge the Commission to reconsider this decision and recognize chess as a sport worthy of inclusion, support, and national awareness.
